Dreaming of a slice of chocolate cake--any suggestions?

Am having a craving for a slice of chocolate cake (eat in or take out). Something fudgy, rich and dense, perhaps accompanied by a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Anyone have suggestions?

    1. Had the most amazing chocolate cake from Costco. It had all the ingrediants you are looking for . . . to die for . . .

who else besides me misses the 7 layer chocolate cake that Geoffrey's used to offer? it sounds wierd, but our local market basket/demoulas has a bakery with a premade chocolate cake w/ choc icing that is unbelievably fudgy. for a supermarket cake under a plastic dome, the quality is excellent.

We had a great, dense, fudgy cake from Rosie's here at work the other day. I know of one Rosie's near Inman Sq. But I hear there are others.

            2. Maybe it's one of your regular spots but I think of Burdick's for anything uber chocolatey and delicious.

I just had their hot chocolate for the first time last weekend. YUM!!! Best I ever had :-)

                  • i really dig the huge slice over at the greenhouse in harvard square . . . you'll need two friends to help you finish it.

I am a huge fan of the Greenhouse's chocolate cake!

                        • What you really need is a scoop of fudge brownie ice cream from Richardson's.

                            1. Had a slice of flourless chocolate cake over at Cafe Paradiso in Harvard Square a few months ago that was really damn good. Don't go in there much and not a coffee drinker, so I can't vouch for much else, but the chocolate cake was excellent...

                                1. It looks like you got lots of responses, and I'm not sure where you're located, but if you ever find yourself in the South End, check out Joe Vs chocolate cake. It's exactly as you're describing; dense, chocolaty, with a deep, fudgy frosting. Really good. So good, in fact, that it's hard to eat there without ordering a slice (and that's a very generous slice too)...

                                    1. Okay they're a chain (go easy on me moderators), but I think the Fabulous Chocolate Mousse Cake at Cheesecake Factory is hard to beat.

                                        1. re: BK

I have to concur with BK - when the urge strikes for big, fudgey, moist chocolate cake, my secret weapon is this cake. Ask for the (pint of) whipped cream on the side so it doesn't get mushy.

                                          • Try the espresso brownie from Whole Foods. Yum.

                                                Oops, I meant cappuccino brownie.

                                                    1. I know it is far, but I head to Gregg's in Providence when I crave fantastic chocolate layer cake.

                                                        1. re: Sara

I agree with Gregg's. One of my cousins will pick up a chocolate cake there from time to time and bring it to my grandmother's house for the family. Really fudgy and good.

                                                          • IMO, the best chocolate cake ever produced in the Boston area is Alden Merrell's chocolate fudge layer cake (see link below). They also make pretty darn good carrot cakes and cheesecakes. You can purchase their products at their retail store in Newburyport, or call the factory and they can probably tell you where to buy them someplace near you. They do a lot of food service business, so there is probably a restaurant or specialty food store in or near your neighborhood that carries them.
