Best Pies in Portland?

I'm cooking Thanksgiving for my family this year (my first attempt) and I'd rather not have to deal with baking pie - pumpkin, apple, pecan, etc. on top of all the rest of the cooking I'm doing. Is there anywhere in town that sells quality pies that someone could reccomend? Thanks!

If it's still around, Mother Dear's is great. I loved her sweet potato pie and peach pie.

Mother Dear's are now also sold at New Seasons. The wonderful octogenerian woman who made the pies is gone though, sold to two men I heard who are using her recipes. Store is still there on Killingsworth just off MLK

Grand Central Bakery has excellent pies, their pumpkin and apple are both excellent. There are several locations around Portland, but call ahead to order.

Last year, I think Criollo had a special holiday selection of items. You might want to check it out.

Half & Half near Powell's is well-known for their pie prowess. I think the cream pies, banana and chocolate especially, are the most kick-ass versions I've ever eaten. Talk to Robin, the owner and director of pies, and she might whip something up for you.

Do I have a recommendation for you!

Directly in response to your question, Julie Richardson and her company, Baker & Spice, have made a holiday tradition of making seasonal pies for the pastry dough impaired and others who have to decide what they have time to make themselves. Julie has a storefront now in Hillsdale, but if things hold to form, she will take orders for holiday pies at her Portland Farmers Market booth. Her all-butter crust pies are to die for.

The cool thing, for those who care, is that with Portland Farmers Market's extended season (through 12/17) it ought to be possible to order not only pies, but also high quality turkeys at the Market too. Plus, you will be able to pick up all your produce and other fixings too on the Saturday before T-giving.
