A bunch of us JP people took a break from being snowbound and/or shoveling to get burger clubs at Triple D's on the corner of So. Huntington and Centre yesterday afternoon. The Patriots crowd hadn't showon up yet so it was pretty quiet even tho options in the neighborhood were few (Sorella's was open). I smelled smoke at one point but thankfully everyone else went outside to not interfere with our gourmet delights. I'm joking of course but it was a fairly decent club w/ fries for $6. Not the best quality meat and the Galway House further up Centre is better for that kind of thing, but it hit the spot after shoveling one side of my car and realizing I'm not going anywhere for a good long time. Then the Patriots ruled the world and provided the only excitement of the weekend.

I have never tried gallway house. How does it compare with costellos?
Don't ask me why I have never gone in, it just looked kinda, you know, sketchy.

Sketchier than Costello's? I think of them equally, and both are less sketchy than Triple D's. I haven't been to the Galway House in a while but I've always had decent cheap food there. Good fried fish, sandwiches, red sauce Italian for $6-12, don't be afraid. Plus now it's not filled with smoke, but there still may be people flossing their teeth at the table (a memorable restaurant experience).

Also, the Galway House has good (well, for the cheap price) Gin & Tonics... I have yet to eat there.

For pub food in JP, I like James's Gate (not their burgers though)...

Agreed completely about the burgers at James's Gate. Funny, the one and only time I ate there I had a burger and was unimpressed; was more 'meatloafy' but I always hear that the food is good, so I guess I just made a bad choice.
For me there's only one place to grab a burger in JP; Costello's. I actually think it's one of the best burgers in Boston (and yes, I am including Tim's, O'Sullivan's, etc. in the mix)

I agree about the Costello's burger. Pretty darn good, although I haven't been in since they changed the restaurant to something else.

For my money, Triple's is a fine example of a true Boston bar, not unlike the fictional Cheers. The first time I ventured there, in my grad school days, it was afternoon and sure enough, an honest-to-goodness Postal Worker was leaning into the bar (Hello, Cliffie)...the next time I came back, I swear the same ten regulars were in the exact same place.

For ambience, you can't beat the ol' town feel - the black and white boxing photos on the wall, from Golden Gloves days gone by...sports memorabilia, and it is clearly a place for gathering local gossip.

As for the chow, it's fast, it's cheap and it's plentiful. I've ordered chicken fingers and received an overflowing basket. The burgers as I recall were more than sufficient. As neighborhood joints go, this is a fine example.

P.s. - don't forget the enjoyment of seeing the look on friends' faces when you say you went to Triple D's and then have to explain it is NOT a strip club.
