it seems like, when it comes to downtown, the south end is my our biggest hope of finding a decent baked good (i.e. one that is not a dunkin donut or a scone from some giant starbucks sconemaking plant).

so i've made my rounds to flour and nashoba brook. love the quality and character at the former in particular. i've had a few items at appleton (not that impressed) and the garden of eden.

what am i missing out? where do people go for a seriously good cookie / muffin?

There's always Clearflour in Brookline/Allston but JP is gonna be overflowing with bakeries after not having any for a while. Bread & Butter on Washington St. has great breads and croissants, haven't tried the fancier tarts. And just got a super flaky almond croissant at Blue Frog on Green St. by Centre that was very good altho it could have had more almond filling. And their cranberry sour cream coffee cake was amazing and huge for $2. A new place is supposed to open by the tea shop and one by Harvest so you can follow my trail by the pastry crumbs.

As far as muffins go, Sorella's on Centre St. has huge ones in interesting combinations of flavors.

I've been there, it's worth a try and supports a good cause. Just a small place on Dartmouth (I think), not a huge variety. There's that cafe on Berkeley St. and another one on Shawmut Ave. a block or so up from the Franklin.
