Tiki Room - A No Go

Ok, my fault. I thought it would be a fun themed night like those that my father took me to in the 1970s. Those great late 1950s/60s Polynesian restaurants that still squeaked out an existence in Southern California.

I went on a date this weekend to the Tiki Room on Landsdown Street. I thought that a night of tropical fun strong drinks, a lot of tropical, south pacific décor and a little fried fun food would be a change of pace.

With no reviews on Chowhound, I went to the web. Nothing terrible, nothing great. Further, the Phantom Gourmet had really enjoyed the experience.

I should have stopped myself.

The drinks were weak and not that special.

The décor was stale (no where close to the Tiki Room at Disneyland, sponsored by Dole).

The fried pu pu food was really bad. I don’t mind a few apps, fried apps but this stuff was really gross.

The service was apathetic and uninterested, even in their world famous drinks.

    1. I like the idea of a Tiki Room and was excited when I heard that one was opening in Boston, but as soon as I found out that it was going to be a Lansdowne St. place, my excitement quickly faded. Give me a romantic evening getting drunk at Kowloons while playing Keno anyday over going to Lansdowne St.

I thought that I wrote the above statement as a joke, but, I now as I reread it, I realize that it is true...

        1. Kowloon, baby. That's what you want. And a Krispy Kreme on the way back to town afterward.

Was Jackie alive in that picture?

                    1. re: ravenous

Not only was he alive in that picture, he's alive right now, too!

                    2. I agree that the pu pu platters are pretty weak. You get much less food than you would in an average platter in any other chinese place, and it's more expensive.
However, I didn't find anything wrong with the drinks, and mine were very strong. And I do think the s'mores pu pu platter is a really good idea and delicious (there's really no way to screw that up). I would go back, to drink and toast marshmallows.

                        1. I didn't think the drinks were that bad. I was drinking mojitos that night, I thought the Tiki's mojitos were very tasty - the mojito made with mango rum is pretty dang good.

Had a fried calamari app, which was really bad. Basic fried calamari with a very small amount of what seemed to be Pace picante on the side. Really lame.
