I am really starving for a great Fish and Chips location. Have tried on in South Boston near the L. Street Bath house, one in Jamaica Plain on Centre Street, a few along the different ocean ways -- but want to hear from anyone who likes good Fish and Chips where are their favorite places. Thanks much Chowhounds!

having not tried a lot of places, i can only vouch for the quality of Matt Murphy's in Brookline. close to the versions I've had in Ireland. Sure other folks will agree.

Thanks Hounds !

Great Feedback !!!! I have to agree that everything has been said has been VERY helpful in my request for advice. I have had the Fish and Chips at Matt Murphy's and in my search so far, it is the leading contender. So I will continue the search!!!! (P.S. - I don't remember who commented -- but if a really serious fish and chips joint doesn't have vinegar on hand -- -it is almost an immediate disqualification --- isn't that a fair statement???)

I agree that Matt Murphy's has great and chips, but I also LOVE it from Shenanigan's in Southie (it is the more battered/tempura type of fish and chips, rather than the more cornmeal crusted type) and I also like the version from Summer Shack (the Alwife location and not the Back Bay location). Both of these are made with a beer batter. To me the most important aspect of great fish and chips is that they not be soggy and have good, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside fries, and both these places do an excellent job!

I have to say I was a bit disappointed with Grafton's fish and chips the one time I had it. The fish was OK (though nothing so special), and I had to ask specially for vinegar (which never arrived, after 2 requests). (Tartar sauce? yuck)
In the same direction, though, I've (almost) always been happy with the fish & chips at the Burren in Davis Square. The beer selection and vinegar already on the table probably help bias me, though. I'm not sure it's the best in Boston (I haven't done much sampling), but it's worth a try.

I also agree on Matt Murphy's, and will heartily recommend East Coast Grill's "Fried Freshest Fish of the Day." Sometimes it's cod, sometimes scallops, sometimes pollock, always great.

Matt Murphy's is great, but I like the Linwood Grill in the Fens, not sure if it is always on the menu, or usually a special, but pretty tasty. Their chips are just hand-cut fries a la East Coast Grill, but they are very good. Also try apps at Linwood, they are always great.
