Hey guys,

I'll be moving to Boston in a few weeks, for about 3 months. I am from Germany and I know that I will MISS Quark cheese, I just NEED it!!!
So could somebody here tell me, whether there are any german grocery stores in Boston????

Thanks! :)

Well it's not quite Boston, but if you'll have access to a car, Karl's Sausage Kitchen in Saugus is about 10 miles north of Boston, and it's the place to go for all your German foods, including homemade sausages.

I am pretty sure I've seen Quark at Whole Foods (an upscale grocery chain with a few outlets around Boston), and I'm sure you could find it at Formaggio Kitchen, which is a wonderful cheese shop in Cambridge. You might even have luck in regular suparmarkets- many of the larger stores have a cheese counter where I've been able to find less common cheeses like gjestost. I've never looked for quark but it wouldn't surprise me if it's there as well. If your market doesn't have quark, they might special-order it for you.

Welcome to Boston!

In which stores have you seen gjetost? I used to see it all the time, but not lately. Figured I was the only person in Boston who liked it.(Shaved on top of salt and peppered cucumbers- oh boy!) Last time I saw it was at (what used to be Bread and Circus; is it Whole Foods?) in Fresh Pond. Know of anyplace around Quincy/Braintree to get it? Does Trader Joes carry it?

Well, I'm north of Boston, but I picked it up a few weeks ago in the cheese case at Stop and Shop (Saugus). I've also consistently found it at Wild Oats (Saugus and Medford). And I think also at the aforementioned Karl's.

We got turned onto it during a trip to Norway, and now I'm getting the little chowpup hooked on it :-)

Full disclosure - I'm the marketing director for the Fruit Center Marketplace. I simply wanted to let you know that we carry gjetost. We have two gourmet food stores on the South Shore, one in Milton (right next to Quincy and Braintree) and one in Hingham.

They definitely have plain quark at Whole Foods in Alewife Plaza in Cambridge (prepare yourself, it ain't cheap here). You can get flavored fruit quark from France (Petite Montebourg brand) in the specialty cheese case at Shaw's Supermarket in the Porter Square Mall in Cambridge--very yummy.

Bring a few bread mixes with you for the days when you're really missing home! Nothing like a nice, dense Vollkornbrot around here.
