Hello Chowhounders---

I just recently moved to Boston from Seattle, and am trying to find good places to eat anyplace near Central Square (work) or Davis Square (home). I don't have a car, so distances matter. I will search through prior posts as soon as possible, but in the meantime, please help!!!

Thanks!

As a former resident of Thorndike Street, my favourites
were:
Mr. Crepe - spiced pear, arugula, blue cheese; Algerian lamb;
Tibetan Restaurant (closer to Teele)- get the Momo combo platter;
Redbones- greens, beans, cornbread and bbq ribs..yummmm;
Gargoyles - for special, french dinners.

(and alas, the closed Sun's Cafe (the Korean place on Mass Ave, other side of Davis - they served a mean bowl of bi bim bap).

You'll find yourself at Rosie's, Diesel Cafe, Someday Cafe and Carberry's often enough for breakfast, a caffeine hit or just to veg out/people watch, on your way to/from McIntyre & Moore or any of the used book and music stores. Diva has a decent Indian lunch buffet, but being Bengali myself i prefer the trek upto Central Square to eat at Royal India cafe. You will also disciver The Middle East and Central Kitchen, in Central Square.

Don't forget to explore up College Ave and Medford, too. Tacos Lupita for killer burritos, Tasty Gourmet for sandwiches. You'll get fat in Davis Sq.

For Central:

Good and cheap Mexican eats at Picante.

I like the food at the Enormous Room, but the place is too loud for my taste; every time I go there I leave hoarse from having to shout to have a conversation. The Enormous Room's companion restaurant, Central Kitchen is OK; a bit overrated, IMO. The place has an attitude.

Good food at Green Street Grill and at Centro. The food at Metro (next door to Centro) is forgivable and forgettable.

Zuzu's and The Middle East are both OK; nice atmosphere, decent food.

Asmara is for OK Ethiopian food.

See below for an earlier thread from a few months back. I think it covers all the Central Square lunchtime options. I've heard the buffet at Royal India is good. And there's a new Thai place opening up on Pearl Street (or Green Street, I always mix them up...) I vote for paninis from Carberry's or lunchtime specials at Koreana, both on Prospect St. Oh, and I recently discovered that the chicken at the Rotisserie House is actually pretty good, and cheap. On the south side of Mass Ave. between Prospect and Inman.

My Davis Sq. recommendations:

Sessa's - on Highland. Good Italian deli. The bread is great.

The Burren - nothing terribly spectacular, but it makes me happy that they have a Ploughman's Lunch on the menu which I saw all over Ireland.

Picante - try the flautas de papa - mashed potatoes inside fried tortillas... good stuff.

Fusion - I'm not a Thai afficionado by any means, but I dig their pad thai. Good Thai iced tea, too.

Blue Shirt - totally healthy stuff, but I go in there for the turkey reuben. It's not a perfectly deli-like one, but it makes me happy.

Walk up Day Street to Mass Ave and on your left will be Pemberton Market. Good fresh veggies, cheeses, and a great prepared food case. Or walk the bike path to Mass Ave, cross the street and go to the Greek Corner and order the greek fries (lemon juice and grated cheese). Amazing.

I used to work in Central Square, what a great place for lunch! Here are my favorite places:

-Moody's Falafel Palace - best falafel I've ever had, and cheap.

-Pu Pu Hot Pot - I prefer this to Mary Chung's because they have more veggie/light options.

-Harvest Co-op - The deli makes great sandwiches to order, has good pre-made sandwiches, soups, salad bar, plus a full grocery store for anything else.

-Rotisserie House - actually more expensive than it used to be, but still very good.

-La Luna - Good stuffed croissants, good tea, pretty good sandwiches for lunch.

-Shaw's - Huge salad bar, lots of premade sandwiches and food.

You'll get fat in Central Square too if you don't watch out :)
