Spotted big bags of them at Whole Foods last week. Key limes are tiny little buggers, so a bit harder to juice. Their flavor is distinctive and really can't be substituted. Here is a fun key lime link:

The season is now. And yes, you can absolutely tell the difference, in taste and in color.
You can find bags of key limes at Whole Foods now, and probably at some regular grocery stores (the same brand). Unlike the Bearss limes you're used to, though, key limes have seeds, so juice them into a measuring cup and then strain the juice into the custard.

Russo's in Watertown had them as of a couple weeks ago.

Trader Joe's in Arlington has had them. They are small, and hard to juice, but it's so worth it - the flavor can't compare to regular Persian limes.

I have been seeing them at Haymarket for the last week or so, the stands that sell pineapple and tropical fruits have them. (This is around 5/1)

Damn, I'm not gonna have time to get there before I use them Fri. nite or Sat. morning. I called Russo's but they said they didn't have any, so I'll pay the inflated Whole Foods prices.
