I'm looking for a place to buy fresh galangal root. A cambridge spot would be great or in the western 'burbs (acton/concord). I'd like to avoid a trip to Chinatown, but just in case if anyone knows of a grocer that is GUARENTEED to have it there I'd appreciate that info too.

As a last resort I have a source for dried galangal and wondered if anyone had any experience using it as a substitute for fresh.

Thanks. -sheila

I've tried the dried version and think it's probably not worth it, or maybe if you then also add some fresh regular ginger along with it.

And yeah, Super 88 is probably best bet to have it at all times.

You might try the Chinese market in Burlington, near Woburn -- link to a discussion, below, including address and directions.
They don't mention galangal (though they do mention lemongrass, a good sign). Sorry, I don't know of an Asian grocery in the Acton/Concord area.

I know they've got dried galangal (which I've used and found adequate) at the spice store next to Christina's Ice Cream outside of Inman Square.

An online resource would be Penzey's spices.
