Has anyone been to Meze in Charlestown recently? Have they worked out any of their "kinks"? I am thinking of going there Saturday night with my boyfriend and his parents for his dad's birthday. His dad likes most types of food but is somewhat particular about service. Thanks.

I think the food is quite good (though not explicitly trad-Greek), the kitchen pacing a bit leisurely (long pauses between courses), the service professional, the views of the Zakim lovely, the Greek wines surprisingly good.

The big caveat is that this is probably the loudest room in town. That won't change without some major remodeling to soften all the hard surfaces. I wouldn't take my elderly mom here: she wouldn't be able to hear a word all night.

I've been there twice, once the first couple of weeks after it opened and the food was delicious - great lamb but if they screwed that up they'd be in trouble. Went back again sat at the bar and had only meze and loved it. I like the loud atmosphere and the leisurely service. They're very nice and attentive and I actually think of the bar as a good "hang out". I would definitely go back again and have put in on my list of go-to's for location and options for bar/meze and dining room.

I have to say, their spanakopita is very very good - but better the first time. The 2nd time I had it I was thinking I could have made it as good.

I agree - I really like the bar area where you can order the mezedes and just snack on different dishes. It was also a good place to watch the game since they have unobstrusive flat screen TVs at either end. I've eaten in the dining room once with some Greek friends, and twice at the bar. Bread comes with olives, olive oil, and a very good, garlicky skordalia. I've also had the fried calamari, the saganaki, taramosalata , melitzanosalata, tzatziki, fried potatoes, and dolmades. All are very good, although I would have liked the eggplant to have more of that smoky grilled/roasted flavor, and the tzatziki with more grated cucumbers. The mussels are excellent, plump and sweet in an ouzo-scented broth. I love the fried potatoes. Like most of the dishes, it's traditional with a twist, and very addictive. Instead of thick wedges of fried potatoes, this comes in thin, crispy rounds sprinkled with Greek oregano and grated cheese. I also love the stuffed calamari with feta and capers. The octopus salata was a little disappointing - could have had more octopus, and they were a little tough. They also have a great selection of tsipouro, ouzo, retsina, and Greek wines.

Also see the thread below for some previous comments. As noted, good food, although more "Greek inspired" than heavily traditional (as you might expect for a trendy restaurant) and REALLY REALLY LOUD. But worth going to.

Cheers,
Kevin
