I had the pleasure of travelling in Crete earlier this summer and discovered a wonderful drink called Raki. I've been told it's similar to grappa, though having never drunk grappa I wouldn't know.

Does anyone know where I might find Raki in the Boston metro area? Alternatively, can you recommend any really good Greek markets that might be able to help? I fear it may be so localized or so much a home brew that it isn't available here...

thanks!

Can't speak to the difference between Turkish and Cretan Rakis, but Gary's Liquors on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury (near the Brookline line) has a number of different rakis, as well as other 'exotic' beverages (Georgian wines, slivovitzes, lots of Russian beers, etc.). Now if we could just get some quality Bulgarian rakia......

Cretan raki is truly wonderful, but, I think indigenous to Crete. Bottles we imbibed while there(1st had some homemade in Galini on the southern coast) were in recapped, unlabeled, glass liter soda bottles. Tried tsipouro(raki)in Santorini& didn't come close. Passed on the whole bottle to a honeymooning couple on the terrace next door. McHugh's Wine & Spirits, 130 Belmont St., Watertown, sells rakis from Turkey & the Middle East, but they taste like Ouzo, not like the delicious raki of Crete. If you find it, let me know!
