Shad Roe - Seeking Sources in Bostson?

Whoops, accidentally posted this in the thread on the General topics board and really should be here...

Anybody have a good source for Shad Roe in Boston?

Only place I have ever seen it is the fish store in Brookline near Kupels.

GalleyGirl's post has got me craving it and I have some Karl's triple smoked bacon in the fridge that is just dying for a companion!

I think Gordon Hammersley is featuring Shad Roe on his menu this spring, but i did not try it

As of Thursday (May 3rd) Savenor's on Charles St had their sign up "Shad Roe has arrived!"

Captain Marden's in Wellesley often has a good quality roe in season. Of course the place to buy em is down at the mouth of the Connecticut River where Shad fisherman and "Shad Boners" jealously guard the secrets of preparing the "y-boned" devil fish. Yankees love a pair of roe wrapped in bacon but I once had a preparation by Chef Bruce Frankel formely of 798 Main in Cambridge who sauteed the delicate roe in cider. Was ambrosia. Thanks for reminding me.

This is timely. I got some from Twin Seafood of Reading on Monday. Call them a day in advance though. (I need a better recipe though. I didn't like how I cooked it)

Tell John that Chris the crazy tornado chaser says hello! I picked up mine earlier, they do sometimes run out by the end of the day. I'm planning to do something like the Margaret Heckler recipe, wrapped in foil and baked with butter for a bit, then open the foil and cover with half cooked bacon and broil until finished. Squeeze on some lemon and make a salad with some palm hearts and a little too much garlic....

Asked the fishmonger at B&C in Framingham last night about it. Said they would definitely get it late march/early april. Said that most of the B&Cs would have it as well.

Savenor's on Beacon Hill carries it every spring. Last year I noticed that they posted a sign on the front door saying it had arrived...a la beaujolais.

TRIPLE-smoked bacon? I've used double-smoked but only as a flavoring, in very small quantities. Looks like this is different. From Karl's the sausage place?

Sorry for the double post--it took a double take.

I had never heard of triple smoked either. They said their normal bacon is double smoked, and their triple smoked does not even need to be cooked.

That said, I cooked some with waffles the other day and it was out of this world excellent.

And yes this is from Karl's Sausage House on route 1 in Saugus.

Thanks to everyone else for the suggestions!

I was just in the Fresh Pond B&C and didn't see it. Try the Fishmonger on Huron.

Haven't checked in Wolf's (Harvard St., Brookline) yet this year but I've bought shad roe there many times in the past. If they don't have any yet, you can always console yourself by popping into Dok Bua next door.

Capt Marden is always a good bet for unigue seasonal seafood.
