Blue Ribbon BBQ is right up the street.....

And, in addition to the menu, there are lots of daily side-dish specials....

Johnny's is a good place. I've heard many people rave about it both on the chowhound site and off-site.
Admittedly, I've only eaten there once so don't remember where it is exactly (but I know it's in Newton). They are a deli and they have a wide selection of offerings. The service was good as well. Sorry for the sparse description but I ate there years and years ago.

As usual, galleygirl has beaten me to the punch. Blue Ribbon is a blast, very small but close by and much better than average barbecue. Not much seating though. There are also some inexpensive pubs in Newton Corner and Nonantum sections like Buff's Pub and the West StreetGrill (or Tavern) respectively. Not great, but cheap. Also, Stellina's in Watertown Square is not far and you could eat at the bar if no table is available.

mike, you totally read my mind. but just make the sundae at cabot's your entire dinner! oh man, those old school hot fudge and butterscotch sauces . . . they kind of serve real food there, too, don't they?

If you aren't afraid of vegetarian food, I'd highly reccomend Life & Light restaurant on Elm St. It's right around the corner from the Blue Ribbon and has IMO, the best vegan food in the Boston area. They do the standard Asian cooking with mock meats but in a much more creative and tastey fashion than Buddha's Delight or Grasshopper. If Life & Light were on the subway, I'd be there several times a week.
