The Modern Pastry thread got me to thinking of my favorite bakery, which I don't recall ever having been mentioned here before:

Lakota Bakery
1373 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington

(I think this is considered Arlington Heights? It's several miles past the center of town headed West). They bake nothing but cookies, but they are the best cookies you will ever have, well worth the drive. You can find their cookies as Rancatore's ice cream shop in Belmont and Darwin's in Harvard Sq. as wel.

The lemon macaroons at Lakota Bakery are worth a trip all by themselves. One is an entire dessert for me. They consist of a 1.5 inch disk of cookie with a dollop of lemon ganache covered with a thick shell of excellent white chocolate. The cookie base is not like a normal almond macaroon, and certainly not like a coconut macaroon, more like an egg white based soft cookie with just a hint of almonds- maybe they are very finely ground or maybe I'm imagining the almonds. In any event they are a fantastic confection, and when you can buy them directly from the Lakota they are sublime. Beware re-sellers like Formaggio's in Cambridge. Sometimes the Lakota macaroons are fresh and other times obviously stale. They have always been fantastic from the original source.

They also do nice cakes, but they have to be ordered in advance.
