so, I tried searching the archives for an answer, but was surprised to find none....

Looking for good sushi in kendall/central/harvard/porter squares to eat at tonight.

Preferably reasonably priced.

Thanks in advance.

by the way, had some nice diner fare at the rather cheesy Johnny's Luncheonette in C-square the other night.

though it's mainly a thai restaurant, sweet chili's on cambridge st in cambridge has the best sushi i've had in boston. sit at the sushi bar and chum will hook you up. the salmon is like buttah. the sea bass is divine (though not PC these days). everything i've had there has been very fresh, huge in size, and reasonably priced. they also make an awesome tom kai gai if you want to venture into the thai food.

I had dinner a year ago at Roka. It's about halfway out on Mass Ave between Central Square and Harvard Square, on the right down below street level. As I remember, it was good but not great (although I haven't tried much Boston sushi, since none of my friend like it and I've never mastered that eating out alone bit). Actually, a dimly lit, fairly elegant and romantic setting. Not very crowded when I was there. Moderately priced.

I can't say I was really enthused about going back, but it's worth trying (plus I'm spoiled, having lived for 8 years in Seattle, which has sushi good enough for Japan).

Cheers,
Kevin

Don'd deprive yourself just because your friends are a bunch of philistines- check out the Boston Sushi Society (web page below). We're a loosely organized group of folks who like sushi and occasionally plan an outing to explore sushi menus across the Boston metro areas. Outings happen in fits and starts, always organized by one of the list members. If there's a place you want to try, throw the suggestion out there and you'll usually get up to 10 dining companions. Discussion of sushi on the mailing list (accessible from that webpage) also happens in fits and starts- it's generally pretty low volume with periods of higher volume.

Or try to get something going with the Chowhounds... this bunch loves to go eat. I'm off the sushi boat for 2 more months (until the little parasite makes his way into the world ;-) but I am sure if you're willing to get the ball rolling, people will follow.

Well, unfortunately my craving got the better of me and I just ended up following the advice of a co-worker and went to Shilla in Harvard Sq.

Was rather disappointed and realized just how spoiled I was when I lived in San Francisco.

Kirala! Ebisu! That place in Japantown near Denny's! Where are you?

Shilla: The Salmon nigiri was tiny and without white fat lines, the saba was a bit tough, everything seemed a bit old, etc. I realized once we got there that it was primarily a Korean restaurant, but I had to get sushi anyway. Perhaps the Korean food is better?

I too had my first Sushi experience at Hana on Mass Ave outside Porter Sq. Went there with my brother in law who lives in San Fransisco and he said that Hana compared to what he eats out there. Being a chef, he is pretty picky about such things. Give Hana a try next time.

Shilla: the Korean food is pretty disappointing as well.

For reasonably priced sushi, there's Bluefin in the Porter Exchange. The sushi quality's pretty decent, and they have specials where you can buy large amounts of sushi for very good prices. There's also a sushi bar (forgot what it's called) in the Porter Exchange, which is not bad as well.

Although I generally have a rule to only post about things I've experienced first-hand, I'll break it this time because a friend who I completely trust just this week said the sushi at Sweet Chili is the bomb. (I *have* tried some of the thai selections , and find them just okay.)

As a rule, I ask the sushi chef what is good that day and usually he will steer you in the houndly direction. Sounds like this place is worth a visit.
