I love Mr. Crepe, a few doors up from Johnny D's and the Davis Square T stop. The avocado crepe and the spicy lamb sausage crepe are both great. Not fast, however.

the best sandwiches and takeout are at pembertons, which technically, isn't in davis square (it's on the corner of day street and mass ave), but given the quality and prices of their sandwiches and prepared foods. what's a block or two. they do a great thanksgiving sandwich -- roased turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce. and each day they have several kinds of sandwiches alreay made up, and at great prices. yesterday i had a ham and cheese on rye that was huge, and cost $4.59.

happy eating.

After living in Davis Square for nearly 3 years, I found that most of the stuff around there is dreck. I'm not led to believe it's improved all that markedly since I moved to NYC. That said, the best place for sandwiches is Nick's Roast Beef just up from the Store24. They make a good cheesesteak (I remember someone else posting about it a while back), and a surprisingly good chicken kabab sub (there's nothing really kabab about it, except they put some marinated chicken on the flat grill to cook, and put it in a sandwich. The club sandwiches were also pretty standard but good. But if you want a real quality sandwich within walking distance from Davis, then Victor's Deli in Ball Square should be your destination. I think I've been a bit overkill with mention of their chicken/veal parm subs. I can't wait to sink into one of those again. It's about a 20 minute walk up from Davis to Broadway, or there's a bus from Davis (the 80? -- memory fails me) that'll drop you right in front of Victor's.

There's a fairly new place called "What's Cooking" down College Ave in Powderhouse Square. They make lots of intersting prepared foods as well as creative sandwiches (hot pressed sandwiches, too). And, I would be remiss if I didn't mention their delicious chocolate bread pudding with some sort of caramel sauce.

I think Joanie might be referring to the Blue Shirt Cafe, which does excellent wrap sandwiches. The Thai seared tofu choice is excellent. Also don't forget Sessa's, the Italian market. They will make you an excellent sub and also have great tidbits like marinated mozz., etc.

yumyum...welcome to the site!

When we have had problems with colliding nametag identities, it's usually 'cuz posters use overly generic names ("Steve", Betty", "Mark P", etc). That's why we encourage people to adopt distinctive nom-de-posts.

But, very very rarely, we have duplication even with distinctive "handles" on the same board, and that's the case with "yumyum", so we're forced (VERY apologetically) to ask, in light of the fact that we have another yumyum on this Boston board, that you please use another handle or perhaps a variation of this one.

Again, we're really sorry about this. But we want to get to know you here, and if there's nametag confusion, that'll be impossible. For example, what if you have completely different taste from the other yumyum, and we mistakenly send you for thin crust pizza when you love thick?

We look forward to your yummy presence in a slightly different guise.

As per prices,

The Blue Shirt Cafe, a wrap place which I'd does filling, good wraps with lots of fresh veggies ranges from about $5 to $7 per sandwhich. It's a little cramped but on a nice day you can sit outside too.

Diesel cafe has a good Monkey Wrench sandwich (turkey & avacado) for about $5.50. Their mesclun salad is also very good. Soups are satisfying and come with nice French bread. About $2 per cup.

Red Bones BBQ is actually pretty reasonable for lunch, but you'll have to leave a tip. Pulled pork sandwich is about $6.

For fast-food Mexican you've got two choices. Anna's which has a good (speaking on a forgiving scale) grilled veggie burrito and good chicken or Picante which has better salsas. You can stay cheaper at Anna's if you avoid the add-ons, say $5 per person at best. Picante's burritos run about $6 and up.

Rose Bud diner has the ubiquitous veggie burger and it comes with wedge potato fries, about $6. They have an OK chicken sandwich too. The diner itself is fully restored and gorgeous.

Mike's is cheap, basic Ital-American. You can get average subs and pizza there--nothing special but it's a Davis Sq. landmark.

Nick's is pretty nasty in my book. But I confess I only tried the tuna sub about 9 years ago. The mayo was bad and I never went back.

What's Cookin' up College Ave. is worth the 7 minute walk out of the square. They make yummy grilled panini sandwiches. Very filling for about $5 to $6 each (if you have a small appetite you can share one). It's also small--three tables--but you can sit out front too on the narrow sidewalk.

I love Anna's and loathe Picante. Anna's offers simple dishes with quality ingredients at reasonable prices. Picante is overdone and overpriced compared to Anna's. Whatever it is, they can't resist slipping a few more heavy, greasy ingredients. A Picante burrito is thicker than my neck and weighs about four pounds.

I agree with Munchabunch that Picante's homemade salsas are quite tasty.
