Island Hopper/Macondo/Overdraught

On the first of two horribly hot nites last week, tried Island Hopper on Mass Ave. by Newbury. Since my friend is vegan and I was gearing up for a 4th of July bbq, I decided to eat vegan with him so we got the crispy veg. rolls ($3.50) and a tofu/eggplant dish ($8.50) (had to pass on our 1st choice cold spicy noodles cuz it had fish sauce, sigh). The rolls were fine and the eggplant dish was decent altho in a tomato based sauce which I don't think was in the description. Also not too spicy as designated but this place seems geared to not too adventurous people. But service was okay, it's comfy, you can watch the action on Mass and Newbury and I assume they have fancy drinks.

Last Wed. before my power went out for 7 hours (and I couldn't even use a fan all nite), we had a nice long dinner at Macondo in Union Sq. Somerville. It certainly was more busy than when C. Simon was there (was it C. Simon or someone else?). I was a little hungrier than I thought I'd be so instead of cerviche, I got conch fritters and their blue potato salad, my friend got the skirt steak in chiptole sauce (I think that was it). The fritters were good altho the batter was a little on the dark side. Tasty and filling. The blue potato salad w/ corn was almost like a piece of quiche, not what I expected. The steak tasted good, very thin crisp fries came with it. My friend knows Paul from Share Our Strength and I kind of know him from ne.food, so he was kind enough to send out their salad plate, four different salads and the black bean salad was esp. good. And even tho we were stuffed, he offered us dessert so we tried to get the lightest thing, caramelized bananas w/ coconut ice cream. It was a fun meal esp. cuz the waiter was great. I spilled my drink like a dork in the cafeteria and he kindly applied the "one spill limit" and gave me another one. They have all those Latin drinks for those who like mojitos and such. Prices are reasonable and the menu is interesting, I'll definitely try more things when it's not 95 degrees out.

Stopped by the Overdraught on Cambridge St. between Inman and Lechmere for burgers last nite. The Thirsty Scholar people own this but it seems more townie bar than Irish pub (esp. with the three drunks hanging at the bar). I don't know if this is a Mon. thing, but all entrees except steak were 25% off last nite. Then again, only two items are more than $9.95, maybe we should have tried something else. But the burgers were good quality and tasty even tho not cooked to specification. Actually, does anyone have a place in town where they get their burgers as asked for cuz I sure never do. The fries were handcut but limp, but I'm not complaining for $6 minus 25%.

This weekend is the Philly food expedition. Thanks for suggestions so far.

  1. Glad to hear feedback on Macondo. Stopped in there for cocktails on Saturday night. Mojitos and Caipirhinas (sp?) for $6 is a steal. The menu looked interested - less expensive than when they opened - and the bartender said that they do brunch all day on Sunday - with an entirely different menu. Must go back for food...
