Vernor's in Boston????

Does anyone know where Vernor's can be purchased in the Boston area?

Thanks in advance,
Todd

We got a 12-pack of Vernors at the aforementioned Wegmans a while back -- is it just me or does it just not taste at all like it used to? It just tasted sweet and bland to me, and I remember it as having much more of a bite.

Although it's possible that having been introduced to Jamaican-style ginger beers in the interim has changed my palate, I guess.

I have not seen at Hi-Rise.

If you're at Wegman's again and like deeply flavored Ginger Ale, I would strongly recomend Saranac Ginger Beer. It is not a spicy, Jamaican-style ginger beer, but a more mild and smooth ginger beer with a great depth of flavor. I would consider Vernor's a strong ginger ale, and Saranac a light ginger beer, which means their pretty similar on that spectrum, but I think Saranac is a lot tastier.

As an aside, I love it when a ten year old thread makes a come back!

I think it's less carbonated than it used to be. The bite was the intense bubbly action, so sharp your nose might hurt. If you let it go flat, like when we were sick and that was all we could stomach, it tasted pretty similar.

Not your imagination. It used to be so peppery that sneezing after the first sip was a common reaction. It's been dumbed down.

Thank you for helping to root this out, Todd -- now I have to get to Hi-Rise! Vernor's is easily the best ginger ale, and I've been missing it out here.

Although it's unfortunately possible that since folks reported it 10 years ago, Hi-Rise no longer carries Vernor's.

Yike! I didn't even look at the dates. 2002? Those are horse-and-buggy days when the Internet was on the telegraph.

They had it a year ago. Owner is from Detroit.

Heh - I was introduced to Vernor's in the 1970s, when it was stocked as one of the soft drinks available at the MIT SIPB because at least one member of that group was from Detroit.

For anyone, try a Vernor's float: Vernor's poured over vanilla ice cream in a tall glass. Better than a coke float.

Pretty much the only good food my grandmother made. She even had curly straws.

This is called a Boston Cooler and is indeed amazing.
A friend grew up in Flint and thought these were actually a Boston thing...he was shocked when he took me to get one and I was like "uh, a what?"

A Boston Cooler, as I remember from childhood, was mixed up ice cream and Vernors while a Vernor's float was ice cream with Vernor's poured over. It would bubble up like crazy. The Cooler was more like a milkshake with Vernors in it.

But the lines would blur depending on who made the drink. My grandmother shifted names for it all the time. Maybe because she had an evil streak.

Vernor's is available at the Wegman's store in Northborough.

Usually stuffed in a corner on the edge of the drink section. I hope they keep selling it.

Sorry, I can't recall the name of this place in Cambridge. It's not far from Formaggio. Mostly they sell their own bread,as well as sandwiches.
                They also sell Vernor's.
                Good luck.

OK I will confess to ignorance. What is Vernor's? Thanks.

Vernors is America's oldest soda. It is a unique tasting ginger ale. If anyone knows how to get some around here, it will be greatly appreciated.

                    Thanks,
                    Todd

They sell Vernor's at the Hi-Rise Bread Company in West Cambridge. It's near the corner of Concord and Huron.

Thanks galleygirl. I have found a few websites that sell it, but I would prefer a local store...if there is one:-). Thanks again.

You're talking about the Hi-Rise Bread Company, located on the corner of Concord & Huron Aves. There's also one off of Harvard Sq., near Casablanca.
