Going to the Capital Grille this weekend. Not having been there before, can you tell me what to expect? Have heard all kind of good things, but all of you seem to be experts & honest about reviews. Thanks.

I was at the Capital Grille in Chestnut Hill two weeks ago and this was my impression: I had been there twice previously, ordered steak and loved it. This past week I ordered a lobster and crabcake appetizer and thought it was just ok (I would not recommend it). I then ordered a grilled veal chop which I thought was rather smallish, overcooked and had little flavor. I would recommend that if you stick to the steaks, you will enjoy it, try the sirloin, ribeye or sliced garlic sirloin. Enjoy.

I have been to the Capital Grille many times and I have found the grilled lobster to be the absolute best. I get either the 3 or 4 pounder (plenty of leftovers for home!) and have it grilled. It gives the lobster a nice flavor and it is not all watery like they can be when boiled or even baked. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I also get the tomatoe and sweet onion salad and the lyonaise potatoes with grilled asparagus. No finer meal on the planet!

Two business associates and I went to the Chestnut Hill location about a year ago. The sides were perfect and my two companions said their steaks were excellent. My steak au poivre may have been the worst steak I've ever had. I ordered medium rare, it was nearly well done, plus they coated the steak with about a pound (I am NOT exaggering here) of peppercorns. We jokingly referred to the place as Scorchy's after that. The bill was around $200. Let me state that I love au poivre, in fact just got back from Montreal (this weekend) where I ate two perfect versions.

I wrote a letter to the manager of the CG specifically saying I was not writing for a "free lunch" but that they needed to rethink their recipe. I never received a reply and I won't return to Capital Grill because of it.

Ok, here we go,,,the "fabulous" Capital Grille in Chestnut Hill. It should indeed be called the "capital" grille because you will need a lot of capital to go there. This place has to be the most over rated eatery around. We have been there too many times and each time we go I feel as though we have gone to Foxwoods, lost a bundle and came home scratching our heads trying to figure out what happened. Come on now $450.00 + for a meal for 4 people and two of the people are teenagers so the bill wasn't racked up because of cocktails. If you don't own a Jag, BMW, Lexus or Mercedez don't bother because you will be uncomfortable when they valet park your car. I think I have learned my lesson once and for all,,don't waste your time or money it's just not worth it.

$450 for 2-adults and 2-teens. Did you have a $300 bottle of wine? Come-on be realistic.

Oh my,
Haven't you been to the Capital Grille? The real bill was actually $489.00. No $300.00 bottle of wine but I will admit to a $80.00 of champagne, appetizer times two and dessert for two people, coffee and after dinner brandies. That is about the average bill we walk out of there with everytime. It's pretty much of a joke among people I know who have been there. We all ask each other did you re-mortgage or take a home equity line of credit to eat there. I think the lowest we have gotten out of there was $350.00 and we thought we had a bargain! look at the clientel and where it is located, they know what they are doing. They have situated themselves in one of the wealthiest communities around so why not take advantage? One of my kids, that I accused of being a teen, just reminded me she is 25..oops. She still didn't drink so that didn't add to the bill.

"Just Say No." That's what you should have told your kids when they ordered 2 apps, each, the double filet each, three desserts each and a doggie bag to go. You have gotta be kidding with $450 for two adults and two teens. Don't blame the resto if the customer knowingly and willingly orders the kitchen sink.

Been to CG near Copley four times. So far my favorite steak place in the 'hood. Three were perfect and one was OMG Bad. On the positive, I love their PH, one of the few steakhouses that prepare for a single. Apps are pretty good, I give the smoked salmon a 7. Onion rings are strips and very good.

The bad nite was a disaster, my PH med-rare, came out well done, the onion rings and fries tasted like the dead sea. It was already 1000 on a week nite and the manager would have done anything i requested, but at that hour i asked for his card and told him lets try another time.

After that I was one of the family.

Hope you get one of the good nights.

let me make it a little clearer. I made a mistake ,as I wrote in another reply, One of the "kids" is 17 and the other "kid" is 25( I still think of the 25 year old as a teen) and no, the kitchen sink was not ordered.I, for one wouldn't allow that. We did the standard fair of appetizer, steaks and that family style potato thing, dessert and after dinner brandy. Remember that the sides are not part of the meal. You can easily go to another eatery in town and pay half the price that was charged at that ego-maniac den called the Capital Grille. All I'm saying is beware, watch your bill and what you are ordering. It adds up quickly and you can definetly get a surprise when they hand you the check. My belief is that they assume if you go you can afford whatever they charge, after all it is Chestnut Hill. The best place around was the Mills Falls in Newton but alas it is gone. If you're going to a place like the Capital Grille , you're not going for hamburgers and chicken fingers but you are going for steaks etc. and you will pay dearly for the "atmosphere". Believe me I am not the only one who feels this way. Oh, by the way, if you ever get seated in the back by the kitchen, ask to have your seat changed unless you want to shout your conversations. Reservations on line are a good idea but you still end up waiting a good 30-45 minutes to be seated esp. on a Fathers' Day or Mothers' Day etc. So while you wait, guess what?.. you order a cocktail and guess what?.. that ends up another off the wall price added to the bill.

I'm sorry, but there's more to this story.

You have been there several times with bills ranging from $350-490. Yet you keep going back and not once did you mention anything about the food, only the bill and the giggles you and your friends have when you speak of it.

So the question for this board is, what did you have, was it good and if not why do you keep going back. Unfair to trash a resto you've been to often, keep ordering a similar menu and then the only complaint you hav is the bill.

Gotta be fair or please let us know what the real issue is

I just saw this thread and am trying to figure it out too. Even with a quite high $160 for 4 entrees, $36 for 4 sides, $30 for apps (only two, right?), $20 for two desserts, 2 brandies at $15 each, $80 champagne, and $16 for 4 coffees, it's $372. Maybe there was a forgotten bottle of wine. Whatever, my two times at C. Grill have been good but the whole overpriced steak house thing is just a once or twice a year thing fo rme.

Mrs.B is in denial, there were 4 adults at the table, I hardly think a 17 & 25 year old are kids, there full grown adults. Also, I agree 2 side each is a waste of food and money, after eating there several times you know not to order that much stuff. I've been to CG on MA Ave. many times, I like the layout, the waitstaff is always professional, the entree's are very good and the prices are fair for dry aged beef . They will go out of their way to please. So if you add the drinks, champagne, apps, sides, entree's, desserts, tax and tip for 4, voila!

Actually steakman, this is a fact rather than a joke. When Darden took over, they changed over all of the Capital's old suppliers to their internal distribution system. The product going to the Grille these days is the exact same product being delivered to Olive Garden and Red Lobster (and not top quality product at that). The Grille is only another stop on the truck's run between the other Darden chains. I know this from the inside of the company.
