Taking a hard look at Somerville

Coyote Apr 24, 2002 10:14 AM

Can't thank you hounds enough for suggestions on where to live and dine in the Boston area. Somervile came up quite a few times and I did a search and came up with postings on Taco's Lupita, Wang's Fast Food, Zoe's, Redbones, Kebab Factory, Bob's Food Store. Dare I hope for Thai, dim sum or great pizza in Somerville?

Try also searching for Davis, Teele, and Magoun Squares, and Powderhouse Circle. They're all in Somerville. There's also a Union Sq. in Somerville (with lots of great chow), but there's one in Allston too, so be careful. Dali Restaurant and Tapas Bar, which has also been discussed on this board, is in Somerville, right across from the Kebab Factory.

There is a Thai restaurant in Union Square in Somerville called the Great Thai Chef. I've never been there myself, but I've heard good things from other people.
On the whole I recommend Somerville as a chow location, and a nice place to live. Plus, you're so close to Cambridge, that everything there is available to you too. Welcome!

I've gotten takeout from the Great Thai chef (didn't know that was the name of it though - saw "Thai", went in). It was quite good. I also hear that eat, next door is great, and have heard good things about the Independent (recently discussed on this board).

I love my place in Somerville - I describe as such: close enough that I can be intown in a couple of minutes, far enough out that I can park easily on my street. and the rent is MUCH cheaper!

I have lived in the ville my whole life and the only place I would rather live is Amsterdam.

I also have heard good things about Great Thai Chef in Union Sq. Pizza you will have plenty of options depending on what kind of pie you prefer. One of the great things about Somerville is that there is a Bar,Sub shop, and Package store on nearly every corner. YOu can't go wrong with that Trifecta

And a quick translation for our out of town friend: "package store" = liquor store. Don't ask me why, it's just the way it is around here.

I always forget about the Package store thing. It is funny and to think I almost wrote "Packie"

I've heard Mary Chang's in Central (just a few T stops away) has good Dim Sum, though I can't vouch for it myself.

Yes, though that's getting into Cambridge, a whole nother thread. The dim sum is wonderful but very different from the ones in Chinatown -- heavier, spicer, no seafood, lots of pork. Small steamer buns with pork is especially good (dipped in soy-vinegar and slivered ginger), and the suan la chow show is wonderful. I could go on but I don't dare start salivating this far from the weekend (dim sum on Saturdays and Sundays only).
