SANDWICH LOVERS NOTE: Darwins Ltd
I know there's been a bit of talk on this board in the past about sandwiches in Cambridge. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but I had to get word out about Darwins.
This place, just outside Harvard Square (about 5 minutes down Mt. Auburn Street, past Chilis), is a gourmet sandwich oasis. The sandwiches, none of which run more than $6.25, are large and outstanding - superbly conceived and assembled. The ingredients are fresh and abundant. The vegetables are sliced thin for easier, more eye-pleasing layering (I love what they do with the carrots and the cucumbers!). And there are options for everyone. The "Story," proscuitto and mozerrella with a vinaigrette, and the "Brattle," with smoked salmon, cream cheese and the classic veggies, are standouts.
They also make the single best vegetarian sandwich I've ever consumed. I forget what it's name is, but it's got hummus, cheddar, green apples, avocado, carrots and sprouts, on your choice of bread. My goodness, it's fabulous.
Plus, the staff is polite and kinda funky. And there are great baked goods from I think Nashoba Bakery (??) - a moonpie I had was sweet and delicious. It's often a bit crowded, but it feels like an incredible find; everybody seems to enjoy being in on this great secret.
So, get to Darwins, Cambridge/Boston sandwich lovers. Best quality sandwich ingredients I've had anywhere, and FOR LESS.
