Weathervane Restaurant in Hamilton

I've been meaning to get around to posting about this place for some time, and last week I had a meal that tipped me over the edge. The Weathervane serves straight-ahead, unpretentious, largely carnivorous American cuisine, but everything is so fresh, impeccably cooked and beautifully presented that spouse & self find ourselves returning again and again. This time it was Maine crab legs and claws, preceded by a gorgeous salad and accompanied by a perfectly baked potato. I've had stone crab in Miami and Dungeness crab in San Francisco, but neither had anything like as much flavor as this. It was delicious, with or without the clarified butter provided for dipping. But let me tell you, I earned it. I'm used to lobster -- I'm always the one who's still sucking the meat out of the legs when everyone else has finished their claw meat and is digging into the tail -- but oh my, this stuff is WORK. The shells are much harder than a lobster shell, and the meat is apt to stick to them. But I'd say it was worth the effort, and I reckon I'll do it again some time or other. My spouse's crab casserole was delicious too, but he didn't get to have that wonderful sense of accomplishment. ;->

The Weathervane is a nice, cozy little dining room too, with a friendly-looking bar at the back. And prices are quite reasonable.

  1. If Maine crabs are your thing to pick out in a restaurant this way, I recommend next time you bring a pair of powerful kitchen shears with you to cut open the legs with.

You know, the kind used to cut up poultry legs.

They gave me a lobster cracker but -- sorry -- it just didn't cut it.
