Hello,

Could someone please recomment some "upscale" veg. restaurants in the Copley Square / Clarendon St. areas?

This would be for a special occasion, and I'm not very familiar with these areas.

Much thanks,
Bob rgsrose@tiac.net

I don't know any upscale vegetarian places near Copley but on a recent trip to Boston some friends and I discovered Grasshopper, in Allston on N. Beacon. It's an all vegan asian restaurant - inexpensive, casual and - most importantly: delicious! It may not be appropriate for your special occasion but you might want to check it out another time.

While not exclusively vegetarian, L'Espalier, one of the most "upscale" places to dine in Boston, offers a vegetarian tasting menu.

You can't get much more upscale than L'espalier. The food is great but expensive ($65 for a prix fixe or $85 for a tasting menu + wine etc..). They have a full vegetarian tasting course (see below for a sample) but you can choose from it for a regular dinner. Reservations are required!

Degustation of winter vegetables
- Sautéed baby bok choy, cashews and shiitakes in a roasted buttercup squash,
peanut and curry broth
- Field green salad with red cabbage, celery root, Chantenay carrots, and spiced pecans; horseradish crème fraîche vinaigrette
- Ratatouille and saffron orange gnocchi with salsify purée, swiss chard and carrot basil oil; Jerusalem artichoke chips
- Risotto of winter beets, yellowfoot chanterelle mushrooms, and fresh Périgord black truffles
- Grand Fromage
- Blood orange sorbet with crispy meringue swirl
- L’Espalier’s grand dessert

The Degustation menu is available to entire tables only

A group of my friends and I often go to Thai Basil, on Newbury St,a block from Copley Sq., for birthdays, celebrations, etc. They are upscale for Thai, and while not strictly vegetarian ,(I have been quasi-veg for 25 years, but I eat fish..) they have a LOT of strictly vegetarian options, will cook anything without the meat, and even have vegetarian spring rolls and dumplings! Their Hot Spicey Tofu is wonderful---even carnivores rave! They also have screened in dining rooms, with cushions and wells for your feet (can't remember what they're called) that you can reserve!
