i found sri lankan food...kinda

a few months ago i had posted a note about sri lankan restaurants in the boston area. no luck! but a few leads to the new york city area where i have been to two different restaurants-- one of which that has since closed. just this weekend, i went to penang, a malaysian restaurant in chinatown. apparently this is a chain, with a few different ones in the nyc and brooklyn area.
i was completely surprised and delighted to find several dishes and items on the menu which so closely resembled sri lankan food...in fact, they were identical to sri lankan food. most of the curries were dry rub spiced-- a common technique used in both cuisines. the spicy squid curry was particularly good. a rice dish combination was almost just like my mom made it! a dollop of rice in the middle of the plate, and then around the rice several mounds of different curries-- dry rub chicken curry pieces, bean and cabbage curry with coconut, and a spicy and sweet fish concoction made with very small fish and fish heads (we call it maldi fish-- i am not sure what it was called at the malaysian restaurant.) even the drinks were made from the same fruits that grow in sri lankan- durian shakes, longan ice drinks, coconut drinks...wonderful!
dessert was a unique dish. it was called "Abc" and reminded me of the indian faloodah-- a concoction usually served in an icecream fluted sundae glass, with ice cream, noodles, farina, syrup all layered in and eaten much like a sundae. ABC had a giant mound of crushed ice with syrup, corn, kidney beans (!), grass jelly, etc. what a surprise!
i highly recommend this place. it does get a bit crowded on the weekends. i am not quite sure whether they take reservations-- but we ended up waiting a half hour.
any other opinions on this restaurant? i loved it and it made me feel like home!
