French -- Truc
The word "truc" in French is a sort of generic "thing" -perhaps like James Brown's "thing" in "It's My Thing". This thing is in the South End on Tremont St. and their thing is French country style food.
The Globe just ran a review of Truc and here is what they said ( in my interpretation). The chef Amanda Lydon ( Chris Lydon's of NPR daughter) is described as achingly enthusiastic. Her cooking is all about tastes. Her parsnip soup is inspiring -the house smoked trout is outstanding. Amanda does a roast chicken with black truffles and mushrooms that can't be described in words. She does a steak and frites that can be pretty ordinary in a French bistro in Paris and makes it sparkle by using superior beef and handcut pototoes with blood sausage and apricot puree. The skate wasn't so good - but other fish dishes were outstanding. Lydon's tarte tartin is fabulous along with her home-made cinnamon ice cream.
Truc is a little thing without much physical space - but the imaginative cooking more than makes up for the venue. I hope that our list fellows will pay Truc a visit and tell us about this French thing.
