Mama Mima Mortadella
Went with a friend today to check out a Chow Post recommendation in Readville. See the post on "Felicia's" by Robert 11/12/99. We were there about 12:30 but they were not. Maybe vacation time? Guess we'll have to wait another day for the "Hand Cut Donuts" touted on their sign. Tutto Italiano 1889 River Street 617 361-4700 is only about two minuets away. We had decided this would be plan (B) if Felicia's didn't work out. Little did I know what a culinary event it would be.
I entered the store and went to the deli case in the back. I was perusing the selection of Italian cold cuts when I saw the Mortadella. I knew right away it was not your garden varity brand. This was no surprise as I know Tutto carries the best Italian deli meats. In the case of Mortadella this would be "San Daniele" from Canada. My eyes were focused on the two "half Moon" pieces and I did not notice they were sitting atop a very large sausage from which they had been cut. If I had noticed this large sausage my next question would not have been .."is that San Della?". The owner (Angelo) answered "no, it is from Italy". For those of you who have read my earlier posts . you know I am aware that the ban on "Italian Mortadella" has just been lifted. Although I fully intended to inquire with Angelo about what up-dates he might have I certainly did not expect him to be in possession of the Holy Grail. I promptly ordered a sandwich with Mortadella and "only" Mortadella. We retired to the parking lot and set up shop on the hood of my car. The weather was perfect. As I raised the sandwich to my mouth the aromas told me I was having a very good day. My taste buds did not contradict my sense of smell.
Having visited Italy in 1998 this was not my first taste of this wonderful sausage. It certainly won't be my last. Keep watch at your favorite Italian Deli. It should be arriving soon.
Today was a very good day!
