Chinese -- Chau Chow

The Golden Palace has finally stopped offering their double lobster deal of two for $9.95 (used to be $8.95) --- so my wife Su and I went down the street to a favorite - the Peach Farm. They were full of Asian people - lots of families. Many were waiting to get a table. It must have been Valentine's Day that brought out this many on a Monday night.

We went across Beech - about a hundred feet --- to the Chau Chow. A new cast of waiters were very attentive. A booth came free and we ordered our usual deep fried oysters. It was Valentines and I need every advantage I can get. Our second dish was the "Chef's Suggestion" list's Jumbo Shrimp with Asparagus and black bean sauce. The oysters were smaller and deep-fried crispier than usual but they were very tasty with the flavored salt that accompanies this dish. The shrimp were OK -not that much flavor -but as good as Jumbo's for a lot less money. The asparagus was also OK -the ends were too stringy to eat. The brown sauce was excellent. I like the Chau Chow.

Dishes we have had in the past fill the extensive menu. Among our faves are spicy dried fried salted squid, the House Special, Sizzling fried noodles, Real Crabmeat with Pea Pod stems, Yellow Chives with Welk, Five Delights in a Nest. They have a LOT of foon and congees - including several Swatowese versions. They list 18 sorts of soups - the Subgum Melon version we like a lot. The many sea food dishes are fine. The lobster and shrimp listings go on to over 20 varieties. The Chau Chow has plenty of beef, pork, duck and chicken dishes. I love the sliced chicken with welk.. The chicken tastes like chicken ought to taste. They probably get it next door at the live poultry supply house. They have seven abalone dishes -expensive I'm sure. I ate my abalone out north of San Francisco up by the Russian River. I've never had any to compare. There are several Wor Mein dishes - noodles of all sorts. I eat the seafood chow fun.. The rice sticks are great.

There are many specials on the wall - in Chinese only. Get your act together to read these. Lobster is a figure for a dragon and a shrimp.

A pair of young Valentines were eating a double lobster --- Cantonese Style -as we walked out into the wet night air. All the good places were filled with people and the not-so-good joints were as empty as a crack whore's head. We walked up Beech to Washington and stopped in at the Pasteur for a take-home Vietnamese hot-pot order - but that is another story :- )
