I was struck by the huge number of selections offered by the salad bar at the Star Market in Central Square Cambridge --just behind the CompUSA store on Mass. Ave.
This is a new supermarket --all bright and shiny --the salad bar must have had 40 or so offerings --and there are tables and chairs in a space to eat --if you aren't doing a take-out.
Its close by the Central Square McDonald's with their fine little indoor play-space for kids --so my wife and I graze on the green stuff while the kids bounce back and forth from the chicken tenders and fries to the plastic balls in the "mosh-pit". Not bad at ten below zero wind-chill. The twins need their bottled up winter energies drained and the outdoor playgrounds are no place for anybody of sound mind in this weather.
I just hope that this bright and styrofoamy Micky D's doesn't sink into their souls and turn them into all-American robots in later life. I see the college students huddled with their burgers and strange thoughts come into my head. Must be the stuff they spray into the heating ducts --or, maybe, the sublimnal messages that are on the edge of perception while they play the elevator music.
