We're spending a few days in Athens to visit our son. In New York all we hear about is that real BBQ can only be had below the Mason-Dixon line. Soooooo, can anyone helps us out with some suggestions in the Athens area? Thanks in advance mel

Athens is by no means a mecca for BBQ (or for that matter anything else) but the best are probably Roosters, Jot 'Em Down (best atmosphere, also - honky tonk meets funky college town), and Marie's (aka Carither's). Clocked is also worth checking out for burgers and fried stuff; Wilson's for down-home Southern. Old lunch-counter spot named The Mayflower on Broad St has good fried chicken at lunch. There is a better upscale restaurant named 5&10 (would be credible though not remarkable in, say, NYC). That's pretty much it.

I moved here from NYC a few years ago and would say that Five and Ten would be both credible and remarkable in NYC. BBQ-wise, would say that Jot 'Em Down is the best.

Hugh,

Are you thinking of Mike and Eds at 1120 Baxter St.? Accross from the Library? I think that that place closed a while back. Very sorry to break it to you this way... Let me know if I'm mistaken... maybe they moved?

Hey, I mentioned Roosters... not Mike and Ed's... that place wasn't too good.
Jot Em Down's ribs, beef ones, are stellar. Good eats there. Roosters is trying but they run into some consistency problems now and again..

Whoops! You're right - it was Jon who mentioned M&E.

I agree with your recommendation of "Jot Em' Down" - and they should ask for a sample of all the sauces - I think that they have, like 5 or 6 different selections.

Roosters is special because of the Vegetarian selections - like V. Brunswick stew - and some actual vegetarian vegetables (a rarity in bbq joints). This is quite a bonus if, like me, most of your friends prefer to go meatless.

For homestyle BBQ (which is pulled or chopped pork in these parts), I would go to Fresh Air BBQ out in Hull - great sauce (they have a lunch buffet if you like that kind of thing) or Jot 'Em Down, which is an old country store on the East Side.

For other Southern-style eats, I would go to Wilson's Soul Food or Weaver D's, both near downtown. Only open for lunch, I think.

Have a good trip!

pinkboa is correct that Weaver D's is worth a trip, though it is open until 6 PM, which is not dinner time in my estimation, though some like to eat that early ... as for the 'cue, it's true that Athens lags behind some other comparable southern towns (i.e. SEC college towns) but the Barbecue Shack, around the corner from which I reside, is ok (better b/c of its convenience) & the newly opened Hollis' Famous Ribs (on W. Broad, in the place of a pre-existing place, the name of which I can't now recall) is pretty damned good, especially for he price. Nothing in Athens is exactly Archibald's in Northport, AL (just across the Black Warrior River from Tuscaloosa) but Hollis' FR is the closest on offer & in a town that is, in fact (despite hanspeterson's delusions) a mecca for music & other types of southern cuisine (new & old), it's, in my opinion (which is partial to Archibald's, various places in Memphis & KC), a solid bet.
