Hi!

I was having a dessert at the cafe next to the Brazilian steakhouse in Brightleaf Square last night, and the person I was with complained that the desserts you get everywhere are all the same. I told her that I was sure that there must be restaurants which have more unusual/original desserts/food ...

It is her birthday soon, and I would like to show her one such place. I am thinking the Magnolia Grill? But does anyone have any better suggestions?

Thanks!

Check out the popsicle place on Hillsborough. Thyme and blueberry posiclles? I'd say that was different.

Besides Loco Pops as Tom suggested, two others come to mind. First, Mithai House of Indian Desserts makes and sells authentic Bengali sweets and desserts. it nears the intersection of 54 and 55. Kurama Sushi and Noodle Express in downtown Chapel Hill near the intersection of Franklin and Columbia sells something called mango mochi ice cream. It's delicious ice cream surrounded by some sort of glutenous dough akin to marshmellow that is a wonderful taste experience.

Karen Barker makes outstanding desserts at Magnolia Grill (had dinner there this past Tuesday in celebration of our 14th anniversary) but I wouldn't call them unusual.

Dig out the penny loafers and take her to the S & T Soda Shop in Pittsboro. It has that old time soda shop atmosphere, They make everything from an egg cream to a banana split that is big enough for 4 (or more). It's on 15/501 in the block north of the traffic circle.
