OBX Vacation- Looking for Good Produce

Hope you hounds can help me out. I am from Boston, and am coming to the Outer Banks for our bi- annual family vacation in mid July. There will be 25 of us.
We drive down from Boston, and usually bring our dry goods and paper products with us. We shop at the Corolla Food Lion for our meats and dairy. I am looking for someplace to buy great produce.
We are coming thru the Bridge/tunnel, onto Route 158. Is there any great produce markets on Rte 158 or near the Wright Memorial Bridge? LAst vacation, we stopped in Elizabeth City overnight, and found some great peaches and corn. This year, we are driving straight thru, and staying in a hotel in Kill Devils Hill the night before we check in to our house.
Any other suggestions other than Food Lion are also welcome. I hear there is a new fish market in Corolla that we will probably try ( to supplement the blues we catch ourselves!). Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. TIA:}}

As others have noted, there are tons of roadside places along the Currituck mainland. Personally, I think Grandy Greenhouse is the best; we drive up from Manteo to get their peaches and watermelons in the summer.

Can't believe no one mentioned GRANDY FARMS on 158, about 7 miles (on the right) before the bridge to the Outerbanks.
It really is a treat, lots of home grown and home made things. Try their pickled peaches !!! To die for !!!

Thanks- Will have to stop by- have never had pickled peaches. Good peaches are available in this area for a really short time. I shop at a great farm in the Boston area, and their peaches were not nearly as good as the ones I had in North CArolina on my last visit.

The last few times I have been to the OBX, I have stopped at "Tarheel" produce - about a mile or so before the bridge, on the right hand side. It is painted "Carolina Blue" - you can't miss it. (You have to be a UNC fan to truly appreciate that). I have had good luck with their produce but haven't been there in a few years. I know it's still there, though. I agree with the poster who said to shop the small places or shacks. There is also a produce place in Duck - think they may be the ones opening in Corolla.

Thanks for the suggestions. This gives us a feel on where to stop. WE don't want to carry the produce in the car any longer than necessary- but then again, we don't want to pass by all the good spots! The blue building will be an easy marker. ( not from Carolina, but a big college BB fan!) Thanks again

Food Lion is a mainstay in NC, same low prices in the resort areas as the rest of their markets. I shop there occasionally, but not my favorite. At OBX I really liked the Seamark Foods store. They are a regional chain out of the Norfolk area I think, and have a couple of stores at OBX. One is also right after the bridge across Currituck Sound, on the right, near the Wal-Mart/K-Mart and the seafood store I mentioned on my last post. The other is down on 158 (on the west side of the hwy) at the lower end of Kill Devil Hills or even as far as Nags Head. Better bakery, produce, meats and deli than FL, IMO. The attached link is just about their OBX stores.

During the summer, there are usually a number of local produce stands open along 158, the last 10-15 miles before getting to the bridge across Currituck Sound, from Coinjock and Grandy down to the bridge. Don't know any by name, but it is usually a stop and look at the goods process. I usually go for the less "permanent" type stands, i.e. the back of a pick-up or a hand built stand in someones yard. It seems like there are a couple of larger, more permanent ones along the way as well, which may be just as good, I just like the locals, but they are often limited to just what they grow. There was also one on the main road (158) along the Kill Devil Hills section, maybe as far down as Nags Head. It was on the east side of the highway, a nice indoor store, but with nice produce the last time I was there. A greater array than a local stand, but probably brought in from the state farmers market (or a wholesaler). For local seafood, there is a great one just after crossing over the bridge on the right, before you get to the split to go north to Corrola. Again, I can't remember the name, but there is a Wal-Mart or K-Mart near/behind/just beyond it. I think it is a blue metal building. A great variety from a wide variety of local fin fish to shell fish.

Nick- thanks for the tips. Will keep my eyes open. And will also have to look for the fish store. I remember passing a Wal MArt on the way last time we were down.
Just an aside- Have travelled and vacationed in all parts of the world, but after our first trip to the Outer Banks, we were hooked. WE go every other year, and love it. And it is wonderful to be able to get a house large enough to hold all 25 of us- with every creature comfort. We have three generations going- great memories made with each trip. We use the pictures from each trip, and make calendars for the year we do not go!!

Macca, Best wishes for a great vacation. I will be in your area in June (Hartford for a conference and then a week-long road trip through NE and to the Maine coast). Enjoy your posts on the NE Board, as I have been reviewing that in preparation for the trip. In Duck is a small restaurant called the Roadside Inn. If you get a chance give it a try. Haven't been in a couple of years, but they had some interesting variations on some old items. Used to have a seared scallops on a black bean and corn relish that was really good. Last time I was there they had taken it off the menu, but when I asked about it they made it for me, but it was a slightly different version, but still quite good. Not a "fine dining" place, but a real roadside place with an upscale twist.

Thanks for the recs. Usually spend all day on the beach- but do try to get out for lunch at least one day. Last time we stayed in 4 wheel drive area, so it was difficult to get around!
Will check out the Roadside Inn- sounds like just the kind of place one of my SIL and I would love to escape to. I usually end up cooking for the 25 of us at least 4 nights (because I love it!), but a small great luch place is just what I would be looking for! Thanks
Enjoy your time in NE- make sure to try our fried clams. Lots of recs on the Boston Board.

Ditto on the seafood store near the Wal-Mart and Seamark stores in Kitty Hawk. Good selection of fresh fish and shellfish - we shop there at least once during our week stay every year.

Thanks. And- believe it or not- I have never been to Kitty Hawk in all the years we gave been going. We usually stay in the Duck/Corolla/4WD area, and q;uite frankly, I don't venture too far from the beautuful ocean all week.
