Hi there -
I'm doing a report on good places to eat in Little Rock...any suggestions? So far I've heard great things about Sims BBQ, L&M BBQ, Loca Luna and Ferneau's. Any idea where to get the famous hubcap burger?

  1. The little cafe inside the art museum has delicious, creative light lunch food. Soups, salads, wraps, desserts, all were lovely.

    2. The hub cap can be yours at Cottoms' in the city. Two locations, 3rd & Victory Downtown and 14710 Cantrell Rd out west. The father store is in Downtown Scott, AR. Bring a friend, you can not eat one by your self.

      1. I like Your Mama's Good Eats or DJ's on 12th St. near UAMS for soul/southern. Taquaria Karina in SW LR is the tops by far for Mexican. Sports Page or AR Burger Co beat out the hubcap at Cothams, in my humble opinion. And for catfish, it's hard to beat Grandpa's in NLR, though Flying Fish in the Rivermarket is pretty good, and much easier to get to. Of course w/ fancy dining, there is always the reliable Brave New Resteraunt. I think you get more bang for your buck than w/ Ferneau. Hope this helps

          1. On New Year's Day I ate at Flying Fish - I was determined to eat at Grampa's but it was a MONDAY and thusly not open *sob*.

            So I waited until the hour of 11am and marched in to deliver my order: half-dozen boiled chilled shrimp, cup of gumbo, grilled catfish plate with veggies and beans & rice.

            All in all it was fabulous, with the exception being the horribly overseasoned grilled zucchini - it was coated in nasty lemon-pepper herb blend.

            Catfish - tasty and spiced. Shrimp - pretty darn good, but my first choice oysters were not on hand.... Gumbo - very good. Thick and with nice chunks of seafood and okra. Red beans - wonderful. Rice.... didn't even try!

            That left room for: banana pudding! It was sweet and a good meal-ender, but too cold and made on the spot so the nilla wafers hadn't "soggified" at all, which would have been tasty.

            Not a cheap brunch/lunch at $20, but a lot of food and a fun environment. I recommend it.


            1. I'll second the review on Flying Fish -- was in LR just before Christmas and dinner there was fun. Got the bbq'd shrimp (large order) and was not disappointed. I'm returning on business next month and will make sure to try the gumbo. Hadn't been there in a decade and was happy to see all the new places popping up in the River Market. Had a good coffee and home-made egg sandwich at the little place there too. Nice little market for chowish souvenirs as well.

              1. I noticed several comments about Ferneau's on here. Thought I'd enlighten anyone considering this poor excuse.

                “That’s just the way we cook it,” we were told by “Head Chef Donnie” after we had sent back our chewy, burnt crab cakes. At this point in the meal they had already served us two watered down tiny glasses of sugar water they had attempted to pass off as alcoholic drinks as well as a soup tasting quite similar to chef Boyardee ravioli sauce and brie accompanied by what was unmistakably jarred marmalade not dissimilar to what I’m accustomed to at my grandma’s. Surely the “Diver Scallops with Creamed Peas” would be good, but to our dismay, the peas were, like the marmalade, unmistakably jarred – or rather in this case canned– and were accompanied by two potato chips and a cheap garden flower for the reasonable price of $24. Come to think of it, our bill of $57 – crab cake removed – was not so bad considering we left there hungry, annoyed, and it did not include a tip. “Chef Donnie” clearly left us with a night to remember – a humorous night during which we laughed all the way home at the ridiculously overpriced and underwhelming meal we’d had. “That’s just the way we cook it,” has forever become a phrase between my fiancé and myself for rude, arrogant, ignorant wannabe fine dining chefs. As for us, we still prefer our crab cakes edible.

                  I couldn't disagree more about the negative comment regarding Ferneau...I, with most of Little Rock, have been a loyal patron since it opened and can't think of a better dining experience in the South. Wine Spectator, TravelHost, CondeNast and numerous local publications tend to agree...the link below is to Ferneau's latest local review...and by the way, the crab cakes there are made up almost entirely of crab, so those of you who are accustomed to the chain restaurants' cost-effective, breadcrumb-filled crab cakes might be ironically disappointed with the large lump crab cake they offer at Ferneau.

                    I am afraid to inform you that the crabcakes at Ferneau's are not made with the finest ingredients. Although, I will admit that it's hard to even have a chance to taste these "fine ingredients" when I can't get past the black layer of burntness that covers the outside of the crabcake. I am quite aware of what makes a good crabcake, unlike Ferneau. I am from California and can assure you that I know what a fresh crabcake tastes like.

                      Just spent 1 afternoon and evening in Little Rock - which was enough time to have both lunch and dinner. For lunch I stopped at the 'Whole Hog Catering and Cafe'; and sampled both a pulled pork sandwich and a brisket sandwich. The pulled pork was tender. It is served without any sauce so that you can select from the 6 sauce offerings found on the table. The pulled pork was good, but I was more impressed with the brisket sandwich - very tender, very juicy and very tasty. I would go back just to have that sandhwich again! Quick note about the ambience - the 'Whole Hog' is really a place for lunch - no frills, no person to seat you down, none of that. You walk up to the counter and order your food and then wait for your number to be called over the speaker - you don't wait for long and the food is tasty.

                      For dinner I made the trip (about 3 miles from downtown) to Acadia. This selection was based on comments from other postings. I'd like to offer my agreement with those previous comments. There were 2 of us for dinner and we tried the 3 course fixed price menu. We both started off with salads: 1 was spinach with bacon, caramelized shallots and a vinagrette; the 2nd was mixed greens with slivered almonds - both were solid salad offerings. For dinner we ordered 1 order of the cornmeal talapia with pinapple and jalepeno chutney and 1 order of the salmon with portabello mushroom risotto. I wanted to like the pineapple/jalepeno chutney more than I did, but I did not find this particular sweet/heat combination something to seek out. However, the talapia itself was cooked well, and there were 2 filets - so you got your money's worth. The risotto/salmon came with some sort of whipped butter on top of the salmon that melted into the fish, this brought a lot of cohesion between the fish and the well executed risotto. The desserts was sampled were blackberry cobbler and creme brullee. The creme brullee came with berries at the bottom of the cup - this was a nice addition to a simple dessert (generally one of my favorites), but I admit that the blackberry cobbler took the prize - the dish was tart and hot and a la mode. If I was going back to Little Rock or had friends who were going - I would either be happy going back or recommending this to others.

                2. Anytime I'm in Little Rock, Doe's Eat Place is on the itinerary. Steaks are served family style and the porterhouse will make you drool on yourself.
