Johnson City -Tri-cities Tennessee

Need recommendations of any sort for Johnson City TN and the Tri-Cities area in general. What, aside from chain restaurants, does this area have to offer in the way of cuisine. Looking for ethnic possibilities, upscale, downhome - anything worth stopping in for a bite to eat. I'm really looking for stuff in Johnson City, but have expanded the search to the tri-cities with the hope of getting some responses. Thanks in advance - Saltchunk
PS - I checked out an earlier post re: Johnson City and Greeneville, but the response did not report any Johnson City restaurants.
Just outside of Johnson city in Hampton, Tn is a tremendous place called Charry Hill. I have had two excellent meals there, I am told that lots of people from JC make this their place to go. I had the crab au gratin both times and it was excellent.
If you don't mind a bit of a drive (less than an hour on I-81) Abingdon, Va has several good places. Allisons for home cooking, Caroline's and Starving Artist for more trendy stuff. You can see their menus on line. Also there is a wonderful bakery, The Wildflour, that does sandwiches at lunch and serves dinner a couple of nights a week. I haven't eaten a meal there.
Ridgewood Barbeque in Elizabethton always gets raves, but I wasn't that impressed
Johnson City is mostly chains - some better than others (eg. Carrabas)

Peerless is a Johnson City institution. Great steaks and the who's who (whomever that may be) of Johnson City eat there.
