What's the best coffee is Winston-Salem? Are there any places that roast their own beans? That take pride in correctly pulling an espresso shot? I know of Krankie's downtown--great space, nice atmosphere, so-so coffee.

I'd also be interested in hearing of other "best-ofs" in W-S. Best soul food? Best Q? Best Thai, Vietnamese?

BBQ little richards on country club then try Mr BBq on peters creek

Soul food - meat and three on third street - Murphy's. greens are good, great fried pork chops or try Sweet Potatoes - shrimp and grits are good when the shrimp is cooked right, fried gren tomatoes and the not very southern caesar salad at it best in the city

Vietnamese - only in GSO - go for saigon then sample the others

Never been impressed with the Thai choices available in winston.

Coffee - where is Krankies? Downtown I have seen SIN, Ollies and the little place on trade street beside sweet potatoes

Having just started working in downtown W-S, I am busy exploring all of the (unfortunately limited) lunch options. I've tried Murphy's once and I'll have to go back as it didn't live up to the hype. For soul food, I much prefer Meta's, which is just around the corner, and features some of the best tasing corn muffins I have ever put between my gums.

We may just have different tastes. I personally do not like Meta's that much. I also thought shabazz was quite underwhelming(maybe just bad). Try the fried green tomatoes and okra basket at sweet potatoes and the sandwiches at cats corner and the reuben at west end cafe. What did you have at Murphy's? I usually only have the fish(Friday's) or pork chops and sides like mac and cheese or collards

At Murphy's I had a very tired fried chicken leg quarter and some green vegetables - can't remember which. I'll try the place again but I was really disappointed in the chicken.

At Meta's I got a pork chop right out of the fryer some greens and that wonderful corn muffin. Meta's also seems to get a lot of traffic from the black community, which I take as a good sign for a soul food place.

In these cafeteria lines it often depends on whether you can get food that is freshly prepared - so that was the difference when I visited each of these places. I'm sure I will be back to both places many times in the future (there being so few choices in the area) and will become more definitive in my thoughts as time passes. Certainly my co-workers all praise Murphy's while none of them had ever been to Meta's.

Freshness a good point. That may be why I disliked Meta's. I went at the end of lunch(around 2-2:30) and was very disappointed. Many people I now raved about Meta's so i was surprised. They do have a little noticed location. If you can drive 5-10 minutes for lunch try the mexican places on the southside notably Paisano(sopes + burritos) and Taco Riendo(gorditas)

Sin, Krankie's and Ollies are all good for coffee and bakery items. Other places for lunch are Christopher's Global Cuisine (the best place) - Brookstown and Broad, Mary's of Course - Brookstown and Cherry, West End Cafe (the old standby) - West Fourth Street across from Grace Court, 4th Street Filling Station - West Fourth and Brookstown. Starbucks is also open, but I'd try the local places first. And, Mellow Mushroom should be opening soon.

I still like Morning Dew for fresh roasted coffee.
A LOT of people don't like the guy who owns the place but I sort of like that!
The coffee is always fresh, they know what they're doing and can answer a question like they have a clue. The guys at Krankie's just started roasting last summer...and I guess its taking some time to get used to it, because everything I've tried tastes burnt, but not like the Charbucks burnt flavor, just sort of bad burned. They have their coffee in a lot of places (Like the Bagel place near Starbux on Stratford and the new place on Trade run by the Silver Moon and Garage people but it doesn't make it any better. Sin is OK but they just treat it like a product, like a muffin, you know sort of sales driven. I haven't been to Ollies in a while but it used be OK coffee. They have the best bread in town, hands down.
I just like Morning Dew's coffee. I don't have to like the guy who runs the place(although I haven't had a bad experience myself with him) The Santa Cruz Smooth is the best dark roast coffee I've had in a few years. I also like the fact that they call the espresso No X. I HATE the way the other places call it expresso!!!! And my pet peave in a coffee shop is a milk crust steam wand and I've never seen anything but a clean steam wand there.
If we're talking about quality, thats the place. For hanging out, try someplace else, but grab a cup from there before you go!

Morning Dew is the place on Burke St., right?

Just curious about problems folks have had with the owner. Every time I have gone in there he has been incredibly solicitous. He just strikes me as a bit of a refugee from the 60s.

Yeah, its on Burke..kinda across from the Burke St. Pub
(He lets people park behind the place at night when they go to the Pub, the lot next to Burke St. Pub Tows to Advance..(Ouch)..so thats cool)

I think a lot of people are still angry about when he bought the place and made it non smoking.
Hes a northerner.
He really does love the coffee though. That comes through more than the Yankee attitude.

Refugee...thats funny..he's wierd. Claims to be a Republican Buddhist, makes for interesting conversation.
Check out the Santa Cruz Smooth. If they're not serving it that day ASK nd they brew one in this metal manual brewer, pretty cool.

A Republican Buddhist!?! Sounds bizarre, but when you think about it, maybe the world could use a few more of those.

Anyway, his love for coffee and personal involvement with the product comes through for me moreso than at any of the other coffee places I have tried in Winston.

I'll seek out the Santa Cruz next time I am there.

Ok So I went to the new Elliot's Revue.
I got there late. Nice place, very cool atmosphere.
I went up and ordered a coffee. This guy says ' we only do Americano's its expresso and water, we don't brew coffee' I had one...that was a mistake, burnt and weak at the same time...how unique. They have other drinks, my friend had a Mocha which was like a bad hot chocolate you'd get at a Gas Station but very chocolatey.
The place was smokey around midnite but my friend said it cleared up later and early on. I wasn't all that impressed, its a nice looking place, but the lack of quality product made it a drag. I don't usually mind smoke, I don't smoke but this was sort of hazy. Oh, and the classiest thing is they have Hot Pockets you can heat yourself down the hallway, since they aren't a cafe...good luck with that. I think coffee would be an improvement and maybe getting it from someplace else might help.

I see that the post on here on here are a bit old. It might be useless to respond. But I think anyone who has had coffee from krankies and it tasted burnt please retry. Krankies places an emphasis on medium roasts and single origin beans. Although Italian, French, and Vienna are available these roasts generally have more of a cult following.

Krankies has a new Ethiopian Sidamo that is a must.
