sushi in asheville (nc)
i was reading the posts about sushi on the NAF and general boards, and got to thinking that i haven't delved too deeply into it. what are some good places to try around asheville? i know about wasabi & zen sushi, but don't know how they rate. opinions on those two, and any others out there.

Has anyone else tried Soro's in Brevard. We've been twice and have been pleasantly surprised, especially since its in Brevard. I believe they have plans to open one in Hendersonville soon too. Everytime we've been its been packed even on Tuesday nights. It is in a strange place (in a strip mall) but I suppose there' s little choice in Brevard.

I think it's actually Sora (with an a). Yes, I think it's very good. They have good uni. The sushi chef (at least the one there on Saturday afternoon) is talkative, and happy to make recommendations. Some of the rolls are expensive and a little overdone with all the fancy sauces, but they taste good.
The best sushi I ever had EVER ANYWHERE was in a strip mall (albeit right off Peachtree Rd in Atlanta). Not sure what that's all about. ;-)

Unfortunately, Koji closed, a new sushi rest. which I have not tried is in it's place. Word is, Koji san is cooking at Blue Fire Grill next to WF on Woodruff road (at the Shops at Gridlock ;-)). Their advertising looks to be a nightmare of Japanese steakhouse, sushi, chain-fusion, etc. So I haven't tried it either.

Ok, i know this is a really old post, but the best sushi in asheville is definetely at Asian Grill on Hendersonville Road. It's a little out of the way, but they always have the freshest fish and tastiest chef's special rolls.

Haven't been to Heiwa in a while but I was never too impressed - not much variety - always seemed like it was primarily salmon
Zen on Merrimon - casual - a lot of variety - once they know you they will suggest the freshest fish so we usually get tataki to start
Wasabi downtown - sit at the sushi bar and show an interest in sushi/sashimi and they will tell you about the best of the specials.
I don't think either of these really compare with Sushi Koji but are both good.›1 Reply -
What's the one down on Lex (or is it biltmore, I get confused) across from the head shops? I thought it sucked.

re: danna
the only one i know of downtown is wasabi on broadway. i usually don't look for sushi places as my wife, until i talked her into it last night, hasn't been into it.
i read your post on sushi koji. where is that located? i occasionally make it to greenville, and would like to try it. -

I don't think Heiwa promotes itself as a sushi place though it serves some sushi dishes. If you go there with that in mind the food is very good. If you're looking for good sushi my favorite is Ichiban down in Biltmore Village. The nice thing is you can bring your non-sushi lovers down for a great meal as well.
