Good Indonesian Food! (SEA)

For Indonesian food that tastes like it ought to, try Batavia, a little hole in the wall on "the Ave" in the U District in Seattle. The fried chicken and stewed jackfruit were just fabulous. Although the grilled chicken was a bit overdone, flavors were good. Gado gado was fine too. They serve Padang style--the original small plates style! And very reasonably priced too.

      I actually don't remember. It's on the east side of the Ave, and I think it was north of 45th.

        The place mentioned is long gone. However, there is a new Indonesian place called Padi at 50th and The Ave. I have yet to try, but a very reliable source has recommended it to me.

          Long gone for good reason! Granted, I only went once, but that once was bad enough to keep me away forever. I wasn't sad to see it go!

            Had a wonderful dinner and incredibly friendly service at Indo Cafe, 539 NE Northgate Way, maybe 9 months ago. I hope it's still there!

              Agreed that Indocafe has the best Indonesian food in Seattle by far. It changed hands sometime mid last year and the new owners are constantly adding a mix of authentic and interesting menu items. Reminds me of the food my mum & g'ma cooks and I can't get cos they're ponds away!

              Tried Batavia 1-2x and only thing I liked was the jackfruit. I heard not so good things about Padi from Indonesians and so did not bother trying. Do post a review if anyone tries!

                Tried the place tonight, sadly, a poor showing.

                I wanted to like it, having read of the new ownership and claims of authenticity; also they apparently donate a portion of the profits to an Indonesian charity. Americanization wasn't an issue: the sambal was funky, fishy and spicy, etc., and I enjoyed the indo-pop music playing.

                Our waiter was either clueless, spaced out, or a mix of the two. Even though there were only two other tables, everything was inexplicably delayed. Sate was overcooked, burnt in some places. The rice was moist and fragrant, but the fried chicken also overdone and bony. We ordered "spicy BBQ fish wrapped in banana leaves" and instead got a fried whole preperation (there seemed to be some variance between the menu we ordered from and the take out menu i checked before I left as to the english description of the dish, ikan bekar pedas manado) I didn't flinch at first, since I have enjoyed similar preperations of whole fish at thai restaurants, and especially the version served at Salima, the malay/cham place on MLK. However, the fish here was tepid on the outside indisputably cold in the center, like they had deep-fried the critter early in the day (or earlier than that), stored it in the fridge, and reheated it. I had been to only 2 indonesian places before (both in Amsterdam), and never sampled this dish, but i doubt that cold, whole fried fish is what it is authentic or properly cooked. In fact, the server apologized for it. I thought the avocado ice cream with chocolate syrup that we were forced to order before the dinner was served so that the restaurant could close earlier might salavage from the experience a cheap dose of exoticism, but the waiter forgot to bring it.
