Memphis Road trip.
Ok I've decided to try some of the "Big boys" bbq. Can anyone recommend a few places in Memphis. I'm travelling the route via Atlanta to Chattanooga to Memphis. So if there are any others I should go out of my way for fell free to chime in. Thanks in advance.

If I had been out of town for a while and wanted to hit a few spots, I'd pick: Payne's on Lamar; BBQ Shop on Madison; Central BBQ on Central.

Also, Cozy Corner (but not the sandwich), and A&R for the fried pies.
When you get back, people in Atlanta will ask you about the Rendezvous and Corky's, which are the most famous establishments in Memphis. Tell them that the Rendezvous was dry and overcooked and Corky's was ordinary, and you won't actually have to visit either of them.

Listen to Jason and Randall. They speak the truth about BBQ in Memphis. What they've said is all you need to know.
If you tire of BBQ try Saigon Le for Vietnamese, Cafe 1912 for a French Bistro, Casa Blanca for really tasty Mediterranean, or Cafe Toscana for delicious Tuscan. All very affordable with lots of character.

In my limited experience, the best things I've had in Memphis would be:
(1) The sandwich at Payne's on Lamar. This is the best barbecue sandwich of any type (e.g., pork shoulder, rib, or beef) I've ever had. Their fried pies are pretty good, too.
(2) Dry ribs at Central BBQ, with a side of bbq potato chips. These were the best ribs I had in Memphis.
(3) Fried pies at A&R on Elvis Presley. Their sandwich was pretty good, but it's the pies I remember most.
So, basically, I'm just echoing a lot of what Jason and Randal have told you.
For pics and descriptions of my visit to Memphis, check out the link below. Another report of a prior visit is linked to from within that one. (Links are also in some old Chowhound reports, if you care to search for them.)
Good luck!

Be sure and click Scott's link--I've yet to see a photograph convey exactly what something tastes like the way Scott's photographs do.
Incidentally, I visited Central today at lunch and noticed that they're prouder of their barbecue than they used to be. Lunch (sandwich) set me back almost ten bucks.
