My wife and I will be going to Clemson, SC, in January. I love barbecue and want to try some near Clemson while my wife is in her meetings - I don't mind driving 20+ miles for good barbecue since I won't have anything else to do. I must admit I have never tried barbecue with mustard sauce, but I am willing. I already love the vinegar-based sauces of eastern NC. I prefer the chopped/pulled variety, preferably cooked over wood.

Any suggestions? I did a Mapquest and it looks like Sweatman's is too far.

Thanks,

Some of the best barbecue in South Carolina is at Henry's Smokehouse at 240 Wade Hampton Blvd.(Hwy 29) in Greenville, SC (864)232-7774. A very easy drive from Clemson.
In Pendleton, just a few miles south of Clemson, is a place called Just Barbecue [they also have/had a place in Clemson that adjoins The Esso Club, a popular watering hole]. Can't tell you much about the 'que as I've only had it one time some 10 years back. I'm sure there are others but you can't go wrong with Henry's.

Thanks sandlapper and easzman for the replies -

I'll start out with Henry's Smokehouse. Just curious, what kind of sauce is on it? Is this barbecue whole-hog? Cooked over wood? I know nothing about SC barbecue other than I've read that some joints use mustard-based sauce, and I believe some others use a vinegar-based sauce.

I'll try it regardless, and post my findings around the end of January upon my return.

Thanks!

Pretty sure Henry's cooks over hickory wood and the sauce is a thin, tomato based sauce; not mustard. I think you'd find the mustard based sauces more prevalent in the midlands of SC. Enjoy!

I second Sandlapper's rec for Henry's Smokehouse. It IS the best BBQ in the Upstate. Very easy place to find and the staff is friendly.

If you get the chance to sample more than one place, you may also want to try Brushy Creek BBQ. They offer a mustard-based sauce and it is closer to Clemson.

Here's a link to a list of Upstate BBQ places.

From a person who eats at Henry's EVERY Saturday night (my husband loves their BBQ). They cook over wood and serve both kinds of sauces although I like it plain with no sauce. Their ribs are also very good. You will have about a 45 minute drive from Clemson. If directions get confusing and people you ask do not know where Henry's is, just tell them it is down the street from Bob Jones University on Wade Hampton.
