Where does one find the best pho, tom yum, or shark fins in this area? I suppose the latter might be a bit of a stretch... but I'd expect to be able to find good pho, at least.

Please don't suggest Kim Son in durham, as it is horrendously awful.

I have always enjoyed the tom yum at Thai Palace in Chapel Hill. Very rich with cocnut milk with a good bit of lime and peppers and chunks of chicken breast. Good luck finding good pho-- shark fin soup? HA!

Tom yum goong traditionally contains no coconut milk!

You may be thinking of tom kha, which the restaurant could be passing off for tom yum.

Can't speak for it myself but some friends have liked some of the dishes, especially soups at the Asian place in the shopping plaza by MLK and University where K-Mart and Pier 1 are. Good Luck.

You may be disappointed. The best pho I've had in the area is at Pho Cali, 3310 Capital Blvd in Raleigh, but it would be average at best in another city. By all means avoid Lime & Basil in Chapel Hill: flavorless, salty broth, clumpy noodles, overcooked meat and rubbery seafood, and, most damning of all, weak, Sanka-style iced coffee. I base this on only one visit, but I haven't seen the need to give it another chance.

Also, what's with $8 for a bowl of pho? I'm to the point where I'd happily pay $80, but good pho in other cities (ok, Philadelphia) costs $4.95. What gives?
