Murray's Barbecue on Old Poole Rd. is the only barbecue joint in Raleigh that still cooks over wood. I have eaten there, but found it slightly more mild than I prefer. Honestly I haven't eaten at that either barbecue joints in Raleigh. I believe the most popular are Old Time BBQ, Clyde Cooper's, and Don Murray's. From what I've read none of these cook with charcoal or wood so I haven't bothered to try.

If you don't mind driving just a little ways, I would go to Stephenson's Barbecue in McGee's Crossroads (address is actually Willow Springs). Stephenson's is about 20 miles east of Raleigh not far off I-40. They cook with charcoal but I found the flavor to be very good and smokey. It was some of the best barbecue I've had!

Another good option is Allen & Son on NC 86 in Chapel Hill. They cook with wood and have excellent barbecue.

Good luck, and please report back your findings!

I agree about Murray's on Old Poole Rd. It's the last spot in Raleighwood producing real barbecue. It's also a really good example of eastern style barbecue. I don't care for the hushpuppies, though... Give 'em a try. It won't be too long until there are no log burners left.

In fact, I've heard a rumor that Murray's may be closing down fairly soon. Hope that it's not true.

Clyde Cooper's on Davie St., downtown, is good & worth a visit. Their sides, esp. collards, are great, and they serve pork skins on the side....

Murray's may in fact be closing soon. I understand the owner was robbed not too long ago around closing time... will hate to see it close if it does go.
