If you are going to be near Richmond on I-95, I'd highly recommend Buz & Ned's. Had dinner last night with friends and it was fabulous. Oddly enough I also had the best margarita I've ever had there.

We were on our way to Florida on 8/30/04 when Gaston came thru during rush hour. Traffic was awful, tornado warnings, flash flood warnings, so we decided to take a detour to Buzz and Ned's and wait out the storm.

We had wonderful barbecue and one great beer each and after half an hour got back into the car. Water in the parking lot halfway up our shins. Waited some more, and the water kept rising.

We saw the people at Buzs and Ned's sandbag the front door. We saw water rise over one of their vans until it was halfway up the front door. We saw them pushing their own cars and water was up to the waist of one short guy and almost to the waists of the tall guys. Eventually we tried to get back on the Interstate.

Needless to say, but unbeknownst to us at the time, Gaston dropped 10 -14 inches of rain and the roads were completely flooded. After hours on the Interstate with the motor turned off, we gave up on Florida, went back home, and slept in our own beds.

My husband still thinks we might have made it to Florida if we hadn't stopped at Buzz and Ned's. I say that the barbecue sustained us and gave us the strength to maintain our good spirits until we could get off the Interstate and go on. It's mighty fine barbecue, gives you the strength to do what needs to be done.

If there is better barbecue anywhere, I want to know about it. And the sides are celestial. And the beer selection is magnificent. Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA is superb.

Thanks to Buzz and Neds for giving us the strength to make it through a very tough night.

On 301 (old 95) in Wilson, NC, try Parker's. An eastern NC style place that is the "granddaddy" of all bbq in NC. Also in Wilson, just down from Parker's is Mitchell's. Good as well, but they are heavy on vegetables as well as good bbq. This is served buffet style.

In Kenly also on 301, just south of Wilson, stop at Moore's. This jewel doesn't look like much from the outside but the bbq is as good as any you will find in the state.

There are others to be sure, but these 2 are some of the best along the route you will be traveling.

Mitchell's in Wilson, NC isn't too far off of I-95. It's good Eastern NC barbecue, cooked over charcoal and wood. Parker's and Bill Ellis's are also in Wilson but aren't as good in my opinion. There will be other stops along the way but these are the joints I am familiar with.

In Lyons, SC...Not far at all from Savannah, is The Pink Pig. It was pretty good. Not as good as the raves it got in Southern Living Magazine, but better than the Georgia Pig IMO. Very nice woman owns it - Very clean...Eight of us tried it on the way to Charleston and everyone liked it for whatever that's worth.

Sweatman's is a very special experience. First, it is only open for limited hours and on limited days. We drove 600 miles round trip in one day to try it. Since then, I have experienced even more BBQ and for me, it is not the best I've ever had. I still rate Tom Jenkins's in Ft. Lauderdale better and Arthur Bryant's in KC as the best I've ever had.

Sweatmans is whole hog "Q" and that makes a big difference. You are not going to experience the same textures or flavors as you'd find when individual pork shoulders are cooked on an open pit sans the rest of the pig itself. I'd liken Sweatman's "Q" to a Cuban pork roast done outside on a rotating spit over hot coals.

Sweatman's is well worth the drive though. It is out in the middle of farm country. It is quite a scene. Just understand the ribs will not have the texture of slabs laid across an open pit and slow cooked for 4 to 8 hours. It is nothing like those ribs.

Sweatman's is in Holly Hill, SC. Take a camera and enjoy it.
