My 8 year old and I are visiting the Atlanta area in a couple of weeks. It's actually going to be a road trip, roaming here and there. My Dad's family is from the area (I live in Michigan), and I want my daughter to get a glimpse of her family past. Our trip will include a visit to McDonough to see where my Dad's folks grew up; a night in Callaway Gardens (my Dad's great aunt was Ida Cason Callaway - he got a fruitcake every year for 20 years from her will!); and we might also blast up to Springer Mountain to see the start of the Appalachian Trail. So, chowhounds, where to go for some good grub? I am sure we will pay a visit to Varsity Dog. My daughter is a pretty good eater. If I find anything approaching my Grandmother's brunswick stew, I'd be pretty damn happy. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Best 'stew in Atlanta: Harold's, downtown, near the Pen on McDonough Blvd. There about a hunnert years. The chopped pork is fine, too, but the stew's the best around. Also: cornbread with cracklin's.

There's a good little restaurant at Callaway serving great breakfasts, but that's all I know around there. If you find any good places round there, I'd like to hear about 'em.

Food at Callawy nothing to rave about. Sort of ordinary at best. Bulloch House in Warm Springs is good old southern cooking. ANd Cricket's in Pne MOuntain is reported to be tasty.

Cricket's is just west of the Calloway Gardens entrance and is quite good. Calloway Gardens operates a place on US 27 on the west side of the road about halfway between Pine Mountain and Hamilton. We had a very enjoyable breakfast there about a year and a half ago.

On your way to springer thier are several place's in Dawsonville Tuscany is up the hill behind the nike store in the outlet mall. Dogs and hogs in Dawsonville has great stew and moist BBQ. If you are into racing try the poolroom for burgers. Thunder road is only open on weekends they have a restaurant inside and it is ran by the poolroom folks. on towards amicolola falls they have a restaurant in the lodge and it is ok but I havent ate there in over a year so not sure. When in the Dawsonville area ask any deputy for help and they will be be glad to help you. who knows the deputy you ask might even be me.

Have a great trip randy525
