My sisters and I are going to Memphis in October 2004 and would like some recommendations for LOCAL food joints. Please no touristy places.
real down home cooking, reasonably priced, and friendly. looking for local charm.
we love BBQ, seafood, and casseroles. I'm food adventurous but my sisters are pretty plain eaters so we want to please everyone with our selections. any suggestions?

1. Cozy Corner for all your barbecue needs. Unless your barbecue needs happen to include dinner, or a sandwich.
2. The Barbecue Shop or Central Barbecue for all your dinner and sandwich-related barbecue needs.
3. The Cupboard for your home-cooking related events. I'm fond of both their chicken and dressing and corn pudding, but everything's pretty good.
4. Unless you mean "catfish" when you mean seafood, you're very likely out of luck. If you do mean catfish, my best experience in town is with Miss Sipp's catfish saloon in Millington, but that's kind of a drive. A new catfish place recently opened on Sycamore View, but I haven't tried it yet. When I want something that actually lived in a sea once, I usually go to Bonefish Grill, but they're a chain.
5. Casseroles. No idea.

I agree w/ Randal on the BBQ places, but if I may say, I've never found the Cupboard to be spectacular.

Two other BBQ places: Payne's on Lamar and McLean and A&R on Elvis Presley Blvd.

Cheeseburger: Alex's Tavern. You can't miss this burger, its the best you will ever taste. Make sure Sonny or Rocky are on the grill when you go.

Soul/Comfort food: Alcenia's on Main & Exchange is great, Ellen's on S. Parkway & Orleans is great, but the absolute best is Java Juice and Jazz on Elvis Presley b/t S. Parkway & Kerr. Incredible catfish, chicken, and vegetables! You might wince at the intersection if you are not "accustomed to urban living," but you have to go. It's fantastic.

For BBQ I also like Leonard's on Fox Plaza Drive. Corky's gets all the press but I think Leonards is more consistent. The Germantown Commissary on Germantown road off Poplar is also very good and I still like going to Tops when I'm in town. I also like Jarrett's on Quince for a nicer meal and Houston's on Poplar is actually very good for a chain.

Downtown, in the Pinch District, the North End is a must. Fantastic rice dishes. Great sandwiches, desserts. I think the Cupboard is great. Especially at lunch. Wide selection of home-style veggies and yumlicious cornbread.
