I'm new to Memphis too, but the common recommendations are:

Corkys BBQ - only one I've tried. liked it muchly. but their beans were too sweet for my taste.
Interstate BBQ
Rendezvous

Here is a link to Memphis mag restaurant guide where they mention a few other favorite BBQ local spots.

If it is Friday or Saturday,I believe the Rendezvous is open for lunch.

Great place for the history and a pretty good pork sandwich.

The Barbecue Shop on Madison,Interstate,Neely's,A &B on Presley,Central on Central,Paynes,Germantown commissary would all be worth a stop.

Randall Cooper should stop by and give the most current.

The BBQ Shop on Madison or Payne's on Elvis Presley are the 2 best lunch spots for a sandwich or plate. Cozy Çorner does other stuff (cornish game hens, chicken, ribs) really well and deserves mention. Go to the Rendezvous for the history and atmosphere, but the pork just isn't as good. Corky's doesn't belong in the same post as those above so I won't mention it.

Donny, are you looking for a sandwich or ribs? I've been kinda staying away from BBQ since the beginning of the year (and I'm 45 lbs lighter for it), but I'd recommend the following:

If you take your sandwich the traditional Memphis way, with slaw, I'd vote A&R on Elvis Presley. And get a fried apple pie, too. Second choices: The Barbecue Shop, Interstate, or the Rendezvous.

If, on the other hand, you're going to order the sandwich without slaw, I'd recommend Central Barbecue, where the slaw is just weird, but the sandwich is pretty good otherwise. Second choices: A&R, Interstate.

If you're looking for something a little more substantial than a sandwich, I'd recommend a visit to Cozy Corner, where everything but the sandwich is excellent.

Best tea: Cozy Corner. Worst tea: A&R. Best Beer Selection: Central. Interesting side dishes: Devilled Eggs at the Germantown Commissary.

NB: Summer's (just about) here, and the time is right for dancing in the potato salad. Interstate and Brad's (in Bartlett) make pretty good versions. Anyone else have recommendations?

I can't say I can recommend the BBQ at Corky's. I know many who will, but I just don't like it. Rendezvous, across from the Peabody is a favorite, or if you are in East Memphis, you are practically in Germantown, where you can go to The Commissary for a good pork bbq sandwich and sides.
