Went to Apizza Scholls for dinner. Interestingly, PortlandFood.org folks kept filing in. I got there at about 5:20 or so and there ended up being 9 of us there (and I know 2 more are going tomorrow) without any real coordination. The place was essentially full the entire time. It's a smaller spot without the huge patio open than the Public House and I imagine they'll be busy a lot.

Since I'm on a low-carb diet, I got a Caesar ($7) with anchovies ($2) and split a meat plate ($8) with a couple Chowhounders/PortlandFooders.

The Caesar was quite tasty, with very fresh and crisp whole leaves of romaine. The lettuce was nicely dressed, though I like a slightly more bold Caesar dressing. But it was good. Over the top were croutons and shavings of decent quality parmeggiano. They forgot the anchovies at first, which is why my pictures don't have them, but I was very happy when they arrived. Normally I like anchovies as an accent only and will often only eat about half the anchovies given with a Caesar. But these were quite good and I could almost eat them solo.

The meat plate was also quite tasty consisting of prosciutto, capicollo, finnochiona salame, and abruzzo sopressatta. Plus olives and cheese. I enjoyed them all, especially the sopressatta with its complex flavor. Maybe Brian or Rodney can pop up and give a source on these.

Of course, I didn't stop there as you can tell from the pics. I also ate off of some of my fellow Portlandfooders' pies, both the margherita ($18) and a sausage and basil ($21). I just had a sliver of each, but they were both excellent as always. Thin and crisp but foldable bread, charred, but not burnt tasting edges and speckled bottoms. A balance of cheese, basil, and bright sauce on top.

Service could be improved and I expect it will. (The servers were a bit pissy and failed to fill my water glass for long intervals.) I imagine they're not happy having not had incomes for a month. But the food is hard to improve on and now that its in Portland proper I expect a lot of you will become regulars.

My DS and his fiance are going to Portland for three days soon. I'll definitely tell them about this place. They are looking for real estate in the area to re-locate when they get married!!

Then they're headed over to the Oregon Coast to relax at our beach cottage for several days. I'm considering sending them to Lucy's Table for a nice dinner. They loved the Portland City Grill and Bluehour. Maybe Wildwood would be a nice splurge place for them, also. ***kim***

If they want to stay in the ballpark, price-wise, more of Lucy's Table than Wildwood, suggest Park Kitchen, clarklewis, Lauro, or Fife. (Plus, Lauro is right across the street from Pix!) All better meals, imo.

They have heard me rave about clarklewis. I think they would enjoy it if they could find it. I'll mention the others to them. They will be staying at the Riverplace Hotel and will have a car, but they don't like to get lost!

Last summer it took him an hour to find us at the Rose Gardens. Hey, what about Ringside? They love steaks and I've heard they have the best onion rings in town. Don't they have an early bird menu there? ***kim***

They do have good onion rings, local, and cheaper than the other steakhouses in town. They also have a happy hour.

btw, below is a Mapquesting of Riverplace to clarklewis. They're really pretty close. Get that boy a present: a class in orienterring or something. I don't know how you don't find the Rose Garden with all the signs.

Not sure if they've changed the list since the move, but the Scholls location had a small, but well-suited list of reasonably priced wines, especially the Italians.

If the wine isn't up to snuff, blame Rodney ;-).

The meats are made by a small producer in Canada called Venetian, who moved there from Italy. Provvista Specialty Foods is my local supplier/distributor for just about everything we use, including the Venetian meats.

Does anyone sell that coppicola here in Portland by the pound?? The other meats are delicious too, but that cappy just rocks!

Congratulations on a great unofficial opening night, Brian. You deserve all of the (continued) success you are about to experience. You are a pizza genius, Sir.

I never thought I'd find pizza in Portland (or anywhere else) as good as that which I grew up with in Bensonhurst in Brooklyn, NY...much less pizza that is better than that! Brian, your pizza is really the best I have ever had and it is because you did your research and because you care so much and refuse to compromise. Bless your mozzarella covered heart! ;o)

I feel a bit sorry for the Hot Lips further west on Hawthorne (the Schmizza in the 30's already bit the dust)...but not very...

So Brian, do you by any chance have a sibling who is as focused on kosher deli as you are on pizza?? Hey, a girl can dream, can't she??

Kim, We spoke to you on the phone yesterday, but couldn't stay in town until dinner. We're from New Haven & are big fans of Pepe's pizza. No snow storm bad enough could keep us away then, so what's a two hour drive from Eugene...our next evening visit to Portland must be to Apizza Scholls!

Enjoyed the drive from Beaverton to Hawthorne much better than the trek out to Scholls. The place was full by 6PM Tuesday also. We arrived around 5:30 and had the special (Mushroom & Sausage - $18) and it was great. This has got to be the best pizza crust I've ever had. Even my wife, who normally leaves the edge of her pizza slices, was eating every bit. The Caesar salad that we split was certainly enough for two (or a poor Atkins dieter who could only have tastes of others' pizza - sorry Nick)

They have Anchor beers on tap and the Liberty Ale went so well with the first slice of pizza that I had another. According to our server they plan on opening the patio in back when the weather gets warmer. That patio was a great nice weather venue when Surabaya was there and I'm looking forward to enjoying pizza there when things warm up.

PSA for all Apizza Scholls fans: Brian is teaching a class at Sur La Table at the Brewery Blocks store on March 7th. It is a hands on class called "Making Artisan Pizza at Home" and is $55 (a bargain for a hands on class!!) It is a Monday evening class starting at 6:30 pm and should last until shortly after 9 pm. You can sign up online at www.surlatable.com and link to the culinary programs from the home page. There are not many spaces left and the class is limited to 16-18 students, so sign up soon if you want to learn first hand from the master. I can't wait to taste this pizza myself!! Full disclosure: I work for SLT!!

Finally got over to Apizza Scholls on Hawthorne last night. I miss the former location since it was five minutes from me and I could go often. Anyway, the pizza was excellent as usual. They were very accomodating. One of the three of us has a tomato allergy, so we ordered our pie half no sauce. It was perfect and the pie was sliced so that there were four pieces without a trace of sauce. It was very busy, but everyone including the wait staff was in good humor. No complaints here except I wish they were still out in Washington County. No other PDX pizza compares to Apizza Scholls in my opinion.
