Cholesterol be darned, I'm a fried chicken fanatic. When I married a Georgia boy I pictured a lavish Sunday dinner with genuine homestyle Southern fried chicken. My mother-in-law, however, informed me "honey, that's just too much work. Most folks go to the Colonel or Hardee's if they want fried chicken."

We're planning a Thanksgiving visit to the in-laws. We're driving to Georgia from Michigan along I-75 - any recommendations for great fried chicken along the way? The in-laws live near Athens, GA - any chow hounds in the area that can suggest a good chicken restaurant?

If you're in Atlanta on a Tuesday, you really don't want to miss the fried chicken special at Watershed (406 W. Ponce DeLeon, Decatur). The restaurant is run by Chef Scott Peacock who published a fantastic cookbook with Edna Lewis.

The upside? The Chicken is first brined and then given a buttermilk soaking before breading resulting in a mosit deeply falorful fried chicken. The downside? They only serve on Tuesdays. Its expensive. And they ofetn run out around 7 pm.

Another serviceable favorite is Satterwhites Southern Feast (4975 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain). The buffet generally always features very good chicken and greens with other southern favorites that can kind of be hit or miss.

When I was a kid growing up in Augusta in the 70s, we always used to stop in Madison, GA at a cafeteria that had really good southern food. The owner used to hand out confederate currency to kids. Anyone remember the name?
