Also, a good review of the better Mexican eateries in the Triangle.

I have tried it once and while I thought it was good, I liked Torero's better. Another Durham hound (Tom?) is a big fan of La Villita. I'll have to give it another try soon.

Been to La Villita many times.

The soft tacos are great, nothing fancy but savory and delicious. Love the off-the-beaten-path (for gringos, anyway) fillings: tripa, cabeza, lengua, al pastor, chorizo. My wife loves the huaraches, which come with many of the same fillings.

In the debit column, I was a bit disappointed by the torta I had--the tortas at Biscuitville/Chino Latino on 98 are better, IMHO. The seafood soup--which Greg Cox recommends at triangle.com--was not good the time I had it. Frozen vegetables, frozen snow crab legs, just a big disappointment.

Back to a big plus: The salsas are great, especially the green salsa. I would go there just for the chips and salsa, which BTW are complimentary. I haven't tried any of the straight dinner entrees other than the seafood soup, but based on my overall impression of the place I'd be very willing to give them a shot. Most of the things I've seen coming out of the kitchen look pretty good.

I went to Magnolia Grill once and very much enjoyed it. Without taking anything away from Karen Barker, who apparently does a nice job, there is no doubt in my mind that the best pastry chef in America, by a long, long way, is Francois Payard.

I have found the pastries to be the low point of a meal at Magnolia Grill.
Maybe I've ordered wrong.

Then again I find Four Square and Nana's to be better.

But congratulations nonetheless to Ms. Baker.

Good to see another Four Square fan. As for Karen's desserts, I highly recommend her crisps. They are sublime and accompanied by an imaginative ice cream concoction.
