(I posted this yesterday, but I don't see it. Sorry if its a dup)

Anyway - I'm looking for international and specialty grocers in Greenville, SC. The Bi-Lo and Publix here near Pelham and I85 just aren't cutting it.

Specifically looking for asain/indian grocers as well as speciality 'gourmet' items, even good butcher shops. I've been through the phone books, but that doesn't work well. The closer to Pelham and I85, the better as I just moved here without a car.

(And if you happen to work for a major tire manufacturer, I'm at x86320 ;-)

Without a car! Unheard of! :-)

The only thing close to you I can think of is Rocky Creek Bakery, where you can get decent bread.

Assuming you have mobile friends, here are a few other ideas:

Earth Fare on Augusta Rd. has a few "gourmet" items(example - it's the only place I know of to get a Fresh Samantha). It's one of the few places to get organic meat and poultry. They carry Split Creek Farm(I think that name is right) goat cheeses made close by in Pendleton SC. Garner's on Pleasantburg is a barely passable organic grocery, and Fresh Market on E. North & Pleasantburg is a step above Bi-Lo & Publix.

Not sure of any Indian grocers, but Pita House on South Pleasantburg has a small Middle-Eastern grocery in the restaurant (which is not bad).

Asian Markets abound on Hwy 29 near Bob Jones. There is another near the intersection of Hwy 29 and Edwards Rd. (headed toward Greer) and at that same intersection a good fish market - Joe Joe's - run by a very friendly and talkative guy. He also has some asian staples. There is a seafood wholesaler in Greer called Gusto which gets some nice stuff and will sell retail to you if you know what you want and are willing to buy a large-ish quantity (I bought a side of Coho salmon recently)

There is no butcher shop in town to my knowledge, post back if you find one.

I'll post back if I think of anything else. Greenville is a great town if you like outdoor activities. The climate is great (usually - this winter is shaping up to suck) the roads north of town are great for road biking, we are within an hour from all that Pisgah Nat'l forest has to offer. Traffic's not bad, cost of living not bad, beach 3 hours away. BUT.. the food scene is non-existant. Where did you move from?

I just moved here from Austin, and previous to that Santa Clara/Santa Cruz (keeps getting worse, eh?).

Where exactly is Hwy 29? Is there another name for the road that MapQuest may recognize? If if you had to pick one asian grocer that stands out amongst the others, which would it be? Since I'll be taking a cab, I need to know exactly where I'm headed :-)

Looking in the archives there's mention of an Indian grocer and vegetarian restaurant called Swad on Laurens/Pleasantburg. We had a Swad back in Austin - not sure if they're related, but the description matches (vegetarian and unkept).

I've heard of Fresh Market from other sources and I'll probably try that this weekend. I'm not much into bread, but there is an Atlanta Bread Co here on the corner (Pelham/I85). I got a loaf there earlier this week, and it would have been better if they hadn't mangled the hell out of it trying to squeeze it into the bag.

As for no butcher, I'm sorry to hear that. Looks like I'll be eating the 40oz Prime Portherhouse at Chophouse '47 a few times a week, then ;-) And Oyster Shooters, of course.

Thanks for all the suggestions; I just need to narrow down the oriental market. I was about to do mailorder for some of the necessities.

Things do seem to be getting worse, Wertz.

Did you get to see Lance while you were in Austin?
Bet you miss Whole Foods Market.

Hwy 29= Wade Hampton Blvd.

Have eaten (once) at Swad. It was not terrible, but pretty scary. I seem to remember some stuff for sale, but don't recall a full-blown market. India Palace is right across the street, so you could try out both restaurants at once.

ATlanta Bread Co. pretty much sucks. They can't make a mocha to save their asses either. Also, don't get your hopes up too much over Fresh Mkt. It's definately better than any other store, but still leaves something to be desired. (and pricey) FWIW, the Earth Fare in Asheville is the best store around.

As for the Asian grocer...I'm no expert, and only go about every 6 months. With that caveat, I'd say try the A Chau ASian Mkt at 3245 Wade Hampton Blvd. As I mentioned, Joe Joe's fish mkt is across the street, so you get two stops for one. I beleive the other one I've been to is Saigon Mkt at 1540 Wade Hampton...I thougth there were more in that area...guess it just keeps changing locations.

Good Luck. I got yet another speeding ticket on the way back from lunch so I may be sharing a cab with you soon.

I don't think Lance realy spends much time in Austin. He's just there for the parades, I think ;-)

I didn't think I'd miss Whole Foods (Whole Foods is based in Austin, in case anybody was wondering). But once I check out the prices at Bi-Lo and Publix, Whole Foods really isn't that much more expensive. I'd love a WF here, yes. In general the prices at the grocers here are 20-50% more than the HEB chain stores in Austin.

Anyway, Thanks for the oriental market locations. If the police auction off your car, lemme know and I'll buy it for you in return for some rides ;-)

SWAD on Laurens has a ok collection of Indian groceries for sale, I think there is another Indian Grocery down the street (named like Indian Groceries) also there is (or used to be) a grocery store in the Oriental Imports store on Laurens. If you walk in, it's in the basement (kinda of confusing). I ran in there to buy lemongrass one time, seemed large in on first impression but didn't explore...

Thanks. I'll probably try visiting both these spots sometime this weekend and will report back. I'm especially interested in the oriental place - if it has groceries. It's closer to my neck of the woods than any others mentioned so far.

While I'm here, are the restaurant Supply stores any good (and will they sell to the public?) I see two in the phone book. I'm not looking for hot-dog carts or vent hoods, but rather comsumer nick-nacks and such (steel bowls, cheap plates, nitrous oxide ;-) etc...).

The rest. supply place on Edwards Road near Wade Hampton Blvd (very close to that oriental market) is the only one I've been to. They do allow the public, and they have plates and the like.

I recently bought a new candy thermometer there for $5, having just let Williams-Sonoma keep their $30 candy thermometer.
