Hey, I'm moving to Columbia in July, but my husband and I have been sniffing places out when we've been down looking for homes.

One place we really like is the Motor Supply Company, on Gervais in the Vista (the gentrified strip of Gervais). It's sort of southern fusion comfort food--hard to explain, but very tasty. We've been to Divino's a few times, which is also down there, and which has reasonably good Italian food, but which is priced for more special-occasion dining. Hampton Vineyard, which is downtown and across the street from the Adam's Mark, is also pretty good--American food with some French and Italian touches, nice wine-bar-style room, a little noisy, but fun.

Over in Five Points, I like Hannah Jane's for lunch (the steak sandwich is extremely tasty), and there's a Thai restaurant whose name escapes me just out of Five Points on Divine (it's sort of set back from the street) that is actually quite good.

Sorry that's all I can offer, but I think it's a decent start considering that I don't yet live there :).

The name of the Thai place is "Ban Sawan", they serve killer tod mun. Another good thai place is "Bangkok Chinese restaurant" on Garners Ferry Rd (4 blocks east of I-77 on the right, next to Wal-Mart). It is a hole-in-the wall but their Radh-Na and Basil stir fried rice with chicken (A7 on the menu) are to die for. Ask for Pik-nam-pla for the added kick.
Also on Garners Ferry Rd (1 mile east of I-77) is Egg Roll Chan, excellent take out place & cafeteria style eat in. Curry Chicken and mamasan's steamed dumplings are worth trying. Will hold MSG and add extra ginger and garlick if you ask.
